Kalix Municipality (Swedish: Kalix kommun, Finnish: Kainuun kunta) is a municipality located in Norrbotten County in northern Sweden. Its main town, or seat, is Kalix.
In 1924, a part of the area, Töre Municipality, became its own separate municipality. However, in 1967, Töre and Nederkalix (the original area) joined back together. This is how the Kalix Municipality we know today was created.

History of Kalix
In the past, Kalix was the name of a court district. This district was called Kalix Lower Court District. It included two parishes: Nederkalix and Överkalix. These names literally mean Lower Kalix and Upper Kalix.
The symbol of a chalice (a special cup) on the coat of arms for Kalix Municipality has an interesting story. It was first seen on the Nederkalix coat of arms in 1800. The word "chalice" comes from the Latin word calix, which means "mug". This word sounds similar to the local Sami pronunciation of Gáláseatnu. This was an old name for the Kalix River.
