Kamala Harris, the current Vice President of the United States, ran for president in 2024. She announced her campaign on July 21, 2024. This happened after President Joe Biden decided not to run again and supported her.
Harris became the official candidate for the Democratic Party on August 5. She chose Minnesota governor Tim Walz as her running mate. This was the first time since 1968 that a major party candidate did not take part in the primaries.
Harris became well-known during her campaign for the United States Senate in 2016. She also tried to become the Democratic candidate for president in 2020 but stopped her campaign due to a lack of money. She then supported Joe Biden and became his running mate. After they won the election, she became the first female Vice President in 2021.
Harris supported many of the same ideas as Biden. She wanted stronger gun control and laws to help with climate change. She also supported voting rights, improving the Affordable Care Act, and federal money for housing.
However, Harris had some different ideas about the economy. She suggested plans to control grocery prices and stop what her campaign called "unfair pricing." She also wanted to limit the cost of prescription drugs and expand the child tax credit.
For foreign policy, she supported helping Ukraine and Israel in their conflicts. But she also said Israel should agree to a ceasefire and work towards peace. On immigration, Harris supported having more Border Patrol agents and changing the immigration system.
A presidential debate between Harris and Donald Trump happened on September 10. A debate between Walz and JD Vance (Trump's running mate) was held on October 1. Harris lost the election to Donald Trump and accepted the results the next day. If she had won, she would have been the first female and first Asian American president.

Campaign Journey
The first presidential debate was on June 27, 2024. After this debate, some people worried about President Joe Biden's age and if he could serve another term. Because of this, Biden decided to withdraw from the election on July 21, 2024. He then supported Kamala Harris to take his place.
Campaign Announcement
On July 21, 2024, Harris announced she would seek the Democratic nomination. The "Biden for President" campaign officially changed its name to "Harris for President." On the day Biden withdrew, a fundraising platform called ActBlue received over $50 million in donations. This was the most money raised in a single day since 2020.
Key Policy Ideas
Gun Safety Laws
Harris supported stronger gun control laws. These included:
- Laws that allow temporary removal of guns from people who might be a danger.
- Checking backgrounds for all gun sales.
- Taking away licenses from some gun makers.
- Stopping the sale of certain types of firearms to regular citizens.
She wanted to make many of these changes through executive actions.
Healthcare Access
Harris supported making healthcare more affordable under the Affordable Care Act. She wanted to:
- Limit how much seniors pay for prescription drugs to $2,000 per year.
- Cap the cost of insulin for people on Medicare at $35.
She also supported efforts to remove medical debt from credit reports. Harris no longer supports a single-payer healthcare system, which means a system where the government pays for all healthcare.
Affordable Housing
Harris proposed plans to make housing more affordable. She suggested:
- Giving $40 billion in tax help to companies that build new starter homes.
- Providing $25,000 to first-time homebuyers to help with down payments.
She also wanted Congress to enforce fair housing laws. She aimed to stop companies from unfairly raising rents and to remove tax benefits for big companies that buy many single-family homes.
Immigration Policies
Harris promised to work for "strong border security" while also creating a way for immigrants to become citizens. After an interview in August 2024, some immigration activists said she seemed to have a tougher stance on immigration than Trump.
Harris believes the immigration system is "broken" and needs fixing. She also supports stricter rules for asylum seekers than President Biden. A campaign video from July 30, 2024, stated that "Kamala Harris supports increasing the number of Border Patrol agents."
Minimum Wage Support
Harris supports raising the federal minimum wage. She has not said an exact number for the wage she supports. However, she has praised states that have raised their minimum wage to at least $15 an hour.
Social Services and Family Support
Harris supported the expanded child tax credit from the American Rescue Plan Act of 2021. She also wanted to make childcare and elder care more affordable. She supported paid family leave. On August 16, 2024, Harris proposed a $6,000 child tax credit. This was part of her plan to help families with economic costs.
Supreme Court Views
Harris supported President Biden's idea for term limits for Supreme Court justices. She also supported changing the Constitution to reverse a Supreme Court decision from 2024.
