A Look at Kaminoyama's Past
The area where Kaminoyama is today was once part of an old Japanese province called Dewa Province. During the Edo period, it was a castle town for the Kaminoyama Domain. It was also a post station along the important Ushū Kaidō highway.
After the Meiji period began, the area became part of Minamimurayama District, Yamagata. Kaminoyama officially became a town on April 1, 1889. It was then made a city on October 1, 1954.
