Kamla Beniwal (born January 12, 1927 – died May 15, 2024) was an important Indian politician. She was also an activist who fought for India's freedom. Kamla Beniwal was a senior member of the Indian National Congress party. She held many different government jobs. She served as a minister and even as the Deputy Chief Minister of Rajasthan in 2003. Later, she became the Governor of several Indian states between 2009 and 2014.

Kamla Beniwal made history in 1954. At just 27 years old, she became the first woman minister in Rajasthan. She was also the first woman Governor of any state in Northeast India. She received the Tamra Patra Award from former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi. This award recognized her important role in India's fight for independence.

Kamla Beniwal's Life and Career

Kamla Beniwal was born on January 12, 1927. Her family lived in a place called Gorir, in the Jhunjhunu district. This area was part of British India at the time. When she was 15, Beniwal joined the Indian National Congress. She became involved in the Quit India Movement. This was a big movement where people demanded that the British leave India.

Starting in Politics

In 1954, when she was 27, Kamla Beniwal won an election. She became a minister in the Rajasthan state government. This was a big achievement for a young woman. She continued to be a minister in Rajasthan for many years. She held important roles like looking after health, education, and farming. She was also the revenue minister in the government led by Ashok Gehlot.

From 1980 to 1990, she was a cabinet minister. This means she was a very important minister. During this time, she handled many different areas. These included farming, animal care, water management, and education.

Becoming a Governor

Kamla Beniwal was appointed Governor of Tripura in October 2009. A Governor is like the head of a state, representing the President of India. She was the first woman to be a governor in any state in Northeast India. A month later, she became the Governor of Gujarat. She served there for more than four years. In July 2014, she was transferred to become the Governor of Mizoram.

Kamla Beniwal served the Rajasthan Government for almost 50 years. She held many different cabinet positions during her long career. She passed away on May 15, 2024, in Jaipur, at the age of 97.

Important Contributions

Kamla Beniwal was known for being a good and honest minister. She worked very hard in all her departments. She had clear ideas about her work and encouraged her team to do their best.

Helping Farmers and Education

As the Agriculture Minister, she helped set up the Rajasthan Agriculture University in Bikaner. This university helps farmers learn new ways to grow crops.

As the Irrigation Minister, she worked on a huge project. She helped create about 48,000 water harvesting plants in Rajasthan. These plants collect and store rainwater. This was great news for farmers, especially in areas that suffer from drought.

She also played a key role in setting up the National Institute of Ayurved in Jaipur. Ayurved is a traditional Indian system of medicine. With her efforts, a Sanskrit University was also established in Jaipur. Sanskrit is an ancient Indian language.

Kamla Beniwal was also very involved in the Co-operative Movement in India. This movement helps people work together to achieve common goals, often in business or farming. She received the Best Co-operator of India Award in 1994–95.
