Kanzaki's Past
The area where Kanzaki is now was once part of an old province called Hizen Province. During the Kofun period (around 300 to 538 AD), powerful families ruled this area. Later, these families were defeated by Emperor Keiko.
During the Edo period (1603 to 1868), Kanzaki was part of the Saga Domain. About one-third of the area belonged to a smaller domain called Hasuike Domain.
After the Meiji restoration in 1868, Japan created a new system for towns and villages. Several villages were formed, including Chitose, Hasuike, Kanzaki, Niiyama, Saigō, Sakaino, Sefuri, and Shirota.
- Kanzaki became a town on July 1, 1893.
- Hasuike became a town on November 3, 1935.
- On March 31, 1955, Saigō and Niiyama villages joined Kanzaki.
- On April 1, 1955, Chitose, Sakaino, Shirota, and parts of Hasuike joined to create Chiyoda village. Chiyoda became a town on April 1, 1965.
The modern city of Kanzaki was officially created on March 20, 2006. This happened when the old town of Kanzaki merged with the town of Chiyoda and the village of Sefuri. Because of this merger, there are no longer any villages in Saga Prefecture.
