Life of Karel Zeman
Karel Zeman was born on November 3, 1910, in a town called Ostroměř. This was in a country known as Austria-Hungary back then. When he was young, his parents wanted him to study business. So, he went to high school for business in Kolín.
In the 1920s, Karel Zeman studied at an advertising school in France. He then worked at an advertising studio in Marseilles until 1936. This is where he first tried animation. He even filmed an advertisement for soap!
He later returned to his home country, which was then called Czechoslovakia. During World War II, he worked in advertising in Brno. A film director named Elmar Klos saw Zeman's work. Klos offered him a job at an animation studio in Zlín. Zeman accepted the job in 1943.
At the studio, Zeman helped the famous animator Hermína Týrlová. By 1945, he became the director of the stop-motion animation team. That same year, he made his first short film, Vánoční sen. This film mixed animated puppets with live actors. It showed how much Zeman loved trying new ways to make movies.
Karel Zeman then started making films on his own. He created a series of funny cartoon shorts about a puppet named Mr. Prokouk. These films were very popular in Czechoslovakia. He also made a unique short film called Inspirace (1948). It told a love story using animated glass figures.
In 1950, he made a half-hour film called Král Lávra. This film won a National Award. In 1952, Zeman finished his first full-length movie, Poklad ptačího ostrova (The Treasure of Bird Island). It was based on a Persian fairy tale. The film looked like Persian paintings and used many different animation styles.
Famous Fantasy Films
Starting in 1955, Karel Zeman made six feature films that became very famous. These movies were special because they beautifully mixed live actors with animation. They often looked like old book illustrations.
- Cesta do pravěku (1955): This film was inspired by Jules Verne's book Journey to the Center of the Earth. It also looked like the paintings of Zdeněk Burian.
- Vynález zkázy (1958): This movie was based on Verne's Facing the Flag. It was filmed to look exactly like the original drawings in Verne's books.
- Baron Prášil (1961): This film celebrated the legendary Baron Munchausen. It was inspired by the old pictures made by Gustave Doré.
- Bláznova kronika (1964): This was a funny movie about the Thirty Years' War. It was inspired by drawings from Matthäus Merian.
- Ukradená vzducholoď (1966): This film was inspired by Verne's books Two Years' Vacation and The Mysterious Island. It also used the Art Nouveau art style.
- Na kometě (1970): This was a fantasy film against war. It was based on Verne's Hector Servadac.
The government of Czechoslovakia gave him the title of National Artist in 1970. This was a big honor.
After these films, Zeman tried more traditional animation styles. He made seven short films about Sinbad the Sailor. These were later combined into a full movie called Pohádky tisíce a jedné noci (1974). His last films were Čarodějův učeň (1977) and Pohádka o Honzíkovi a Mařence (1980). On his 70th birthday in 1980, he received another award, the Order of the Republic.
Karel Zeman passed away on April 5, 1989, in Gottwaldov (now called Zlín).
Karel Zeman's Legacy
Karel Zeman's movies inspired many other filmmakers. The Czech animator Jan Švankmajer and the director Terry Gilliam were influenced by him. Terry Gilliam said Zeman did what he was still trying to do: mix live action with animation.
The famous director Tim Burton also said Zeman's creative process was "extremely inspirational." He mentioned Zeman and Ray Harryhausen as influences for stop-motion animation. Ray Harryhausen himself also admired Zeman's work. Even the films of director Wes Anderson have shown nods to Zeman's style.
A film historian named Georges Sadoul said Zeman "widened the horizons of animation." He called Zeman Méliès's successor. Sadoul said Zeman was an artist who loved his work. He created his "innocent inventions" with great patience, not big budgets.
In 2010, curators at the Barbican Centre said Zeman was "unarguably one of the greatest animators of all time."
In 2012, a museum opened in Prague to celebrate Karel Zeman and his work. It is called the Muzeum Karla Zemana. It is located near the famous Charles Bridge.
