Early Life and Education

Karen Hunter grew up in East Orange, New Jersey. She finished high school at Marylawn of the Oranges High School in 1983. Later, in 1987, she earned a degree in English literature from Drew University.

Karen Hunter has had a long and interesting career in media. She has worked as a teacher, a newspaper editor, and a radio host.

Teaching and Journalism Roles

From 1996 to 1998, Karen Hunter taught journalism at New York University. She also worked for four years on the editorial board of the New York Daily News. In 1999, she was part of the news teams that won the Pulitzer Prize and the Polk Award. Before that, she was the first African-American female news columnist for the paper. She started there in 1988 as a sports writer, then wrote about features and business.

In January 2002, Hunter College appointed her as a visiting professor. Today, she is a distinguished lecturer at Hunter College. She also hosted a morning radio talk show in New York City for three years.

In 2007, she started her own publishing company, Karen Hunter Publishing. This company is part of Pocket Books/Simon & Schuster. In April 2011, Karen Hunter called for people to stop watching the TV show Celebrity Apprentice. This was in response to comments made by Donald Trump about Barack Obama. She explained that she wanted people to know they have power to make a difference.

In 2015, Karen Hunter started a petition on MoveOn.org. She asked for the Confederate flag to be removed from the South Carolina State House. This happened after a tragic event where nine people were killed at a church in Charleston, South Carolina. Within three days, 500,000 people signed her petition. Soon after, Governor Nikki Haley announced the flag would be removed. The South Carolina state legislature then voted to take down the flag.

During the 2016 United States presidential election, on The Karen Hunter Show, Republican presidential candidate Ben Carson shared a story. He told Hunter that he was once held at gunpoint at a Popeyes restaurant in Maryland. Carson said he told the robber to go to the cashier instead.
