A Look at Katagami's History
The area where Katagami is today was once part of an old Japanese region called Dewa Province. During the Edo period (a time in Japanese history from 1603 to 1868), the Satake clan controlled this area. They ruled from Kubota Domain.
How Katagami City Was Formed
After the Meiji period began in 1868, this area became part of Akita Prefecture. The city of Katagami was officially created on March 22, 2005. It was formed by combining three smaller towns: Iitagawa, Shōwa, and Tennō. The name "kata" in Katagami refers to the nearby Hachirogata Lagoon.
