Katharine Juliet Ross (born January 29, 1940) is a retired American actress and author. She is known for her roles in famous movies of the 1960s and 1970s. During her career, she won two Golden Globe Awards, a BAFTA Award, and was nominated for an Academy Award.
Ross began her acting career on television in 1962. Her first movie was the Civil War drama Shenandoah in 1965. She became famous for playing Elaine Robinson in the hit comedy-drama The Graduate (1967). This role won her a Golden Globe for New Star of the Year and an Academy Award nomination.
She gained more fame for her roles in two popular Western movies in 1969: Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid and Tell Them Willie Boy Is Here. For these films, she won a BAFTA Award for Best Actress.
In the 1970s, Ross starred in the horror film The Stepford Wives (1975), which earned her a Saturn Award. She also won her second Golden Globe for the drama Voyage of the Damned (1976). Later in her career, she appeared in the popular film Donnie Darko (2001) and acted alongside her husband, Sam Elliott, in The Hero (2017).

Early life
Katharine Ross was born in Los Angeles, California, on January 29, 1940. Her father, Dudley Ross, was in the Navy. Her family later moved to Walnut Creek, California.
As a child, Ross loved riding horses and was friends with rodeo rider Casey Tibbs. She graduated from Las Lomas High School in 1957. She went to Santa Rosa Junior College, where she first tried acting in a play called The King and I. After college, she moved to San Francisco and joined The Actors Workshop to study acting for three years.
Career
Early Roles
To earn money while studying acting, Ross began appearing in television shows in Los Angeles. Her first TV role was in a show called Sam Benedict in 1962.
Over the next few years, she had guest roles in many popular TV shows. These included The Virginian, Gunsmoke, and The Alfred Hitchcock Hour. She also appeared in an episode of The Big Valley.
Her first movie was Shenandoah in 1965, where she played the daughter-in-law of movie star James Stewart. She also had small parts in the films The Singing Nun (1966) and Mister Buddwing (1966).
Becoming a Star
Ross's big break came in 1967 when she starred as Elaine Robinson in the movie The Graduate. She acted alongside Dustin Hoffman and Anne Bancroft. The movie was a huge success, and her performance earned her an Academy Award nomination and a Golden Globe Award.
After The Graduate, Ross starred in the movie Hellfighters (1968) with the famous actor John Wayne.
In 1969, she starred in two hit Westerns. She played a Native American woman in Tell Them Willie Boy Is Here with Robert Redford. She also played Etta Place in Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid, alongside Paul Newman and Robert Redford. This movie became one of the most famous Westerns of all time. For her work in both films, Ross won the BAFTA Award for Best Actress.

After her success in the late 1960s, Ross took a short break from Hollywood. She returned to acting in movies like They Only Kill Their Masters (1972).
One of her most famous roles from this time was in the 1975 science-fiction horror film The Stepford Wives. For this role, she won the Saturn Award for Best Actress.
She also appeared in the drama Voyage of the Damned (1977), which earned her a second Golden Globe Award. In 1978, she starred in the horror film The Legacy with actor Sam Elliott, who would later become her husband.
Television and Later Work
In the 1980s, Ross acted mostly in movies made for television. She starred in Murder in Texas (1981) and The Shadow Riders (1982). From 1985 to 1987, she was a regular on the TV series The Colbys.
After the 1980s, Ross worked less often. She returned to the big screen in 2001 with a role in the movie Donnie Darko, where she played a therapist.
In 2017, she appeared in the movie The Hero, where she played the ex-wife of a character played by her real-life husband, Sam Elliott.
Personal life
Katharine Ross has been married five times. She married actor Joel Fabiani in 1960, but they divorced in 1962. She was then married to John Marion from 1964 to 1967.
In 1969, she married Conrad Hall, the cinematographer who worked on Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid. They divorced in 1973. Her fourth marriage was to Gaetano Lisi, from 1974 to 1979.
In 1984, Ross married actor Sam Elliott. They had first met in 1969 but started dating in 1978 while working on the movie The Legacy. They have one daughter, Cleo Rose Elliott, who was born in 1984.
