Katharine Juliet Ross (born January 29, 1940) is a well-known American actress who is now retired. She has won many awards, including a BAFTA Award and two Golden Globe Awards. She was also nominated for an Academy Award.
Katharine Ross started her acting career in television in 1962. Her first movie was Shenandoah in 1965. She became very famous for her role as Elaine Robinson in the movie The Graduate (1967). This role earned her an Academy Award nomination. She also won a Golden Globe Award for being a "New Star of the Year."
She continued to gain praise for her roles in two Western movies from 1969: Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid and Tell Them Willie Boy Is Here. For these films, she won the BAFTA Award for Best Actress. In the 1970s, she starred in the horror film The Stepford Wives (1975) and won another Golden Globe for Voyage of the Damned (1976). She also appeared in movies like The Swarm (1978) and The Final Countdown (1980).
During the 1980s, Katharine Ross mostly acted in TV movies and the series The Colbys. She took a break from acting for much of the 1990s. Later, she returned to film in Donnie Darko (2001) and voiced a character in American Dad! in 2016. In 2017, she acted alongside her husband, Sam Elliott, in the movie The Hero.

Early Life and Education
Katharine Ross was born in Hollywood, California, on January 29, 1940. Her father worked for the Navy and the Associated Press. Her mother was from Oklahoma. Her family later moved to Walnut Creek.
When she was young, Ross loved riding horses. She graduated from Las Lomas High School in 1957. She then studied at Santa Rosa Junior College for a year, where she discovered acting by being in a play called The King and I. She decided to leave college and move to San Francisco to study acting more seriously.
She joined a group called The Actors Workshop and trained there for three years.
Acting Career Beginnings
In 1964, Katharine Ross was chosen by John Houseman to play Cordelia in a play called King Lear. While she was still training, she started acting in TV shows in Los Angeles to earn money. She was first signed by Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer, then by Universal Pictures.
Her first TV role was in Sam Benedict in 1962. She appeared in many other TV shows during the 1960s. These included The Virginian, Gunsmoke, and The Big Valley.
Katharine Ross made her first movie, Shenandoah, in 1965. In this film, she played the daughter-in-law of actor James Stewart. She also had supporting roles in movies like The Singing Nun (1966) and Mister Buddwing (1966).
Becoming a Star
Katharine Ross's big break came when she starred as Elaine Robinson in the movie The Graduate (1967). She acted alongside Dustin Hoffman and Anne Bancroft. This role made her very famous and earned her an Academy Award nomination. She also won a Golden Globe Award for her performance.
After The Graduate, she starred in Hellfighters (1968) with John Wayne. She then played a Native American woman in the Western film Tell Them Willie Boy Is Here (1969), starring Robert Redford.
Another very successful movie for her was Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid (1969). In this film, she played Etta Place, acting with Paul Newman and Robert Redford. Both Tell Them Willie Boy is Here and Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid earned her the BAFTA Award for Best Actress.
Later Career and Television Roles
After a period of less frequent acting, Katharine Ross returned to the screen. One of her most famous roles from this time was in the 1975 film The Stepford Wives. For this role, she won the Saturn Award for Best Actress.
She also appeared in the TV movie Wanted: The Sundance Woman (1976), where she played Etta Place again. She then starred in the drama film Voyage of the Damned (1977), which earned her a second Golden Globe Award. She also acted in the disaster film The Swarm (1978) and the supernatural horror film The Legacy (1978). In The Legacy, she worked with Sam Elliott, who would later become her husband.
From 1979 onwards, Ross appeared in many TV movies. These included Murder in Texas (1981) and The Shadow Riders (1982). She also had a role in the 1980s TV series The Colbys, acting alongside Charlton Heston.
In 1991, she co-wrote and starred in Conagher with her husband, Sam Elliott. She also played Donnie's therapist in the popular film Donnie Darko (2001). More recently, she appeared in Eye of the Dolphin (2006) and The Hero (2017) with Sam Elliott.
Personal Life
Katharine Ross has been married five times. Her first marriage was to Joel Fabiani in 1960. She later married John Marion in 1964.
In 1969, she married Conrad Hall, who was the cinematographer for Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid. After their divorce, she married Gaetano "Tom" Lisi in 1974.
On May 1, 1984, Katharine Ross married actor Sam Elliott. They had worked together on Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid and started dating after meeting again on the set of The Legacy. They have one daughter named Cleo Rose Elliott, who was born in 1984.
