Kaweah Peaks Ridge facts for kids

Kids Encyclopedia Facts

The Kaweah Peaks Ridge is a cool mountain ridge in California's Sierra Nevada mountains. Think of a 'ridge' as a long, narrow line of mountain peaks. This ridge is like a smaller branch coming off a bigger mountain range called the Great Western Divide.

You can find it inside Sequoia National Park at about 36°33′N 118°30.5′W / 36.550°N 118.5083°W / 36.550; -118.5083. The rocks here are mostly rugged and loose metamorphic rock. This means they are very old rocks that have changed shape over time due to heat and pressure.

Famous Peaks on Kaweah Ridge

The Kaweah Peaks Ridge is home to several officially named mountains. These peaks are very tall and offer amazing views for those who visit. Here are some of the main ones:

Kaweahs from west
Kaweah Peaks from the west. You can see Mount Kaweah on the right. In the middle are Red Kaweah and Black Kaweah. On the left is Triple Divide Peak.

Where is Kaweah Peaks Ridge Located?

The Kaweah Peaks are quite far from any roads. You would need to hike about 20 miles (32 kilometers) to reach them! They are located south of the Kings-Kaweah Divide and east of the Great Western Divide.

Even though they are called "Kaweah" peaks, they are actually in the Kern River area, not the Kaweah River area. This is a bit confusing, but it's how the land is divided.

Exploring the Basins

Around these peaks, you'll find many high mountain lakes. To the west, there's a place called Nine Lake Basin. To the east, you'll find Kaweah Basin. These basins are like natural bowls in the mountains, filled with beautiful lakes.

Not many people visit the Kaweah Peaks because they are so isolated. But for those who do, it's a special place. You can enjoy quiet camping, fishing in the clear lakes, and challenging mountain climbing. Just remember that the rocks are often loose, so it's important to be careful.
