Kaya Scodelario (born March 13, 1992) is a British actress. She became well-known for her role as Effy Stonem in the TV show Skins. She was nominated for two Golden Nymph Awards for this role.
Kaya has also starred in many movies. These include the Maze Runner series (2014–2018), Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales (2017), and Crawl (2019). More recently, in 2024, she appeared in the action comedy series The Gentlemen and the drama series Senna.

Early Life and Growing Up
Kaya Rose Humphrey was born on March 13, 1992, in Haywards Heath, England. Her mother, Katia Scodelario, is Brazilian. Her father, Roger Humphrey, was Polish-English. He passed away in 2010.
Kaya's parents divorced when she was very young. Her mother moved them to London when Kaya was four. They found a home on Holloway Road. Kaya uses her mother's last name, Scodelario. She also spoke Portuguese at home.
She went to St Joseph’s Catholic Primary School and later Bishop Douglass Catholic School. She also attended Islington Arts and Media School. Kaya enjoyed school plays. Acting helped her feel better when she faced bullying.
Starting Her Acting Journey
In 2006, when Kaya was 14, she got a part in the TV show Skins. She had no acting experience before this. At first, she felt too young for the audition. But a producer asked her to stay and read for the part of Effy Stonem.
In the first season, her character Effy did not have many lines. However, Effy's role grew a lot in the second season. She became a main character in the third and fourth seasons. This made Effy one of the few characters to appear in many seasons of Skins. Kaya finished filming the show in November 2009. She said she would miss being on the show.
Critics really liked her acting. She was nominated for Best Actress at the TV Quick Awards in 2009 and 2010. Kaya returned to play Effy again in 2013 for the final season of Skins. This two-part story showed Effy's life as an adult. Kaya felt she could relate to Effy's journey from a teenager to an adult.
Movies and TV Shows
Kaya's first movie was the science fiction film Moon in 2009. It received good reviews. In 2010, she played Tasha in the movie Shank. She also appeared in Clash of the Titans that same year.
In 2010, Kaya was cast as Cathy in a new movie version of Wuthering Heights. The film was shown at the Venice Film Festival in 2011. People praised Kaya's performance, calling it "heart-wrenching."
In 2011, she joined the cast of the British thriller Twenty8k. This movie came out in September 2012. She also starred in Now Is Good with Dakota Fanning. This film is about a teenage girl with a serious illness. Kaya played Zoey, the main character's best friend. In September 2011, Kaya filmed a TV series for BBC One called True Love. It was an improvised show about different love stories.
In 2012, Kaya made her first American movie, The Truth About Emanuel. She played Emanuel, a troubled 17-year-old. She also had a small role in the film Spike Island. In 2013, she starred in the Channel 4 drama Southcliffe. This series was about a town dealing with a series of shootings.
The Maze Runner Series
Kaya joined The Maze Runner film series in April 2013. She played Teresa, the main female character. The first movie was released in September 2014. Its sequel, Maze Runner: The Scorch Trials, came out in September 2015.
She played Teresa again in Maze Runner: The Death Cure. This movie was released in January 2018.
Recent Projects
In 2019, Kaya had several new projects. She appeared in Extremely Wicked, Shockingly Evil and Vile, a film about a famous criminal. She played his wife, Carole Ann Boone. She also starred in the horror film Crawl, which received good reviews.
Her next horror film was Resident Evil: Welcome to Raccoon City in 2021. In this movie, Kaya played the video game character Claire Redfield.
Kaya also starred in a Netflix series called Spinning Out in 2019. This show was about figure skating and explored mental health challenges within a family.
In 2019, Kaya became the face of Cartier's new jewelry line. She also filmed a new Agatha Christie miniseries, The Pale Horse, for Amazon and BBC. In 2021, Kaya joined the film Don't Make Me Go. She also filmed This Is Christmas in 2022.
In 2023, Kaya filmed two more series for Netflix. These were The Gentlemen, inspired by a Guy Ritchie film, and Senna, a drama about a famous race car driver. She played a reporter named Laura Harrison in Senna. Kaya is also set to star in the Netflix thriller film The Woman in Cabin 10.
Personal Life
Kaya Scodelario was in a relationship with her Skins co-star Jack O'Connell for about a year. They remained good friends after they broke up. She then dated Elliott Tittensor from 2009 to 2014.
Kaya and Benjamin Walker started dating in 2014 while filming The King's Daughter. They got engaged in December 2014 and married in December 2015. Their first child, a son, was born in November 2016. Kaya's Skins co-star Daniel Kaluuya is her son's godfather. In September 2021, Kaya announced she was expecting her second child. She gave birth to a daughter in December 2021. In February 2024, Kaya and Benjamin announced they had separated.
