Kaya Scodelario-Davis (born Kaya Rose Humphrey on March 13, 1992) is a talented British actress. She became well-known for her role as Effy Stonem in the TV show Skins. She also starred in popular movies like the Maze Runner series, Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales, and Crawl. More recently, she appeared in the TV series The Gentlemen and Senna.

Early Life and Acting Start

Kaya Rose Humphrey was born in Haywards Heath, West Sussex, England. Her mother, Katia Scodelario, is from Brazil. Her father, Roger Humphrey, was English. Kaya's parents divorced when she was young. Her mother raised her in London.

Kaya took her mother's last name, Scodelario. She spoke Portuguese at home. Kaya went to Bishop Douglass Catholic School and Islington Arts and Media School. She loved being in school plays. Acting helped her feel better when she faced bullying.

In 2006, when Kaya was 14, she got a role in the TV show Skins. She had no acting experience before this. At the audition, she almost left because she felt too young. But a producer asked her to stay and read for the part of Effy Stonem.

In the first series of Skins, Effy did not have many lines. But her character became very important in the second series. Kaya became the main character in the third and fourth series. Effy was one of the few characters to appear in many seasons of the show. Critics praised Kaya's acting. She was nominated for Best Actress twice at the TV Quick Awards.

Kaya also returned as Effy for a special two-part episode called "Fire". This episode showed Effy's life as an adult. Kaya felt she could relate to Effy trying to change from a teenager to an adult.

First Film Roles

Kaya's first movie was the science fiction film Moon in 2009. It received good reviews. In 2010, she played a teenager named Tasha in the film Shank. She also appeared in Clash of the Titans that same year.

In 2011, Kaya starred as Cathy in a new version of Wuthering Heights. The movie was shown at the Venice Film Festival. Many people praised Kaya's performance, calling it "heart-wrenching".

Kaya continued to take on many roles. In 2012, she played Sally Weaver in the British thriller Twenty8k. She also starred with Dakota Fanning in Now Is Good. This film was about a teenage girl with a serious illness. Kaya played Zoey, the main character's best friend.

In 2012, Kaya filmed her first American movie, The Truth About Emanuel. She played Emanuel, a troubled 17-year-old. She also had a small role in the film Spike Island. In 2013, she was in the TV drama Southcliffe. This series was about a town dealing with a tragedy.

The Maze Runner Series and Beyond

In 2013, Kaya was cast as Teresa in The Maze Runner movie series. This popular series is based on the books by James Dashner. The first movie came out in 2014. The sequel, Maze Runner: The Scorch Trials, followed in 2015.

Kaya also filmed The Moon and the Sun in 2014, which was later released as The King's Daughter in 2022. She starred in the thriller Tiger House in 2015. In 2017, she had a main role in Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales.

She returned as Teresa in Maze Runner: The Death Cure, which was released in 2018. In 2019, Kaya starred in the horror film Crawl. She then played Claire Redfield in the horror film Resident Evil: Welcome to Raccoon City in 2021.

Kaya also led the Netflix series Spinning Out in 2019. This show was about figure skating and family challenges. In 2020, she appeared in the Agatha Christie miniseries The Pale Horse. More recently, she filmed two new Netflix series: The Gentlemen and Senna. She will also star in the upcoming thriller film The Woman in Cabin 10.

Personal Life

Kaya Scodelario married actor Benjamin Walker in December 2015. They both took the last name "Scodelario-Davis." Their first child, a son, was born in November 2016. Her Skins co-star Daniel Kaluuya is her son's godfather. In December 2021, Kaya gave birth to their second child, a daughter. In February 2024, Kaya and Benjamin announced they had separated.
