Kayla Jane Barron (born September 19, 1987) is an American engineer and NASA astronaut. She is also a submarine warfare officer in the U.S. Navy.
Barron was chosen by NASA in June 2017 to become an astronaut. She completed her training in 2020. Her first trip to space was on the SpaceX Crew-3 mission. She launched to the International Space Station (ISS) on November 10, 2021. Before becoming an astronaut, Barron served on a submarine and worked at the Naval Academy.

Early Life and Education
Kayla Barron was born on September 19, 1987, in Pocatello, Idaho. Her parents are Lauri and Scott Sax. Her family later moved to Richland, Washington. She finished high school at Richland High School in 2006.
After high school, Barron went to the United States Naval Academy. In 2010, she earned a degree in systems engineering. While there, she was part of the cross country and track teams.
Barron then studied at the University of Cambridge in England. She received a master's degree in nuclear engineering in 2011. Her research looked at new types of nuclear reactors.
Military Career
After getting her master's degree, Kayla Barron made history. She was among the first group of women to become officers on submarines. She trained in the Navy's nuclear power program.
Barron served on the Ohio-class submarine USS Maine. She completed three patrols on the submarine. After her time on the USS Maine, she worked at the Naval Academy. She stayed there until NASA selected her as an astronaut.
NASA Career
In June 2017, Kayla Barron was chosen for NASA Astronaut Group 22. She then began two years of astronaut training. She was the fifth woman from the Naval Academy to be selected as an astronaut.
Barron trained for the SpaceX Crew-3 mission. On this mission, she worked as a mission specialist aboard the International Space Station. She launched into space on the SpaceX Crew Dragon capsule named Endurance. This happened on November 10, 2021.
She was part of the Expedition 67 crew on the ISS. The Crew-3 mission landed in the Gulf of Mexico on May 6, 2022. Kayla Barron spent 176 days in space on this mission.
Personal Life
Kayla Barron is married to Tom Barron. He is an officer in the United States Army Special Forces.
Honors
Kayla Barron has received several special honors. She was a Trident Scholar and a Distinguished Graduate at the Naval Academy. She was also a Gates Cambridge Scholar at Cambridge University. These honors recognize her excellent academic achievements.
