Keith Richburg is an American journalist who has worked for many years as a foreign correspondent. He spent over 30 years reporting for The Washington Post. Currently, he teaches journalism at Princeton University. From 2016 to 2023, he was the director of the Journalism and Media Studies Centre at the University of Hong Kong. He also served as President of the Hong Kong Foreign Correspondents' Club from 2021 to 2023.

Early Life and Education

Keith Richburg was born in Detroit, Michigan. He went to the University Liggett School. Later, he studied at the University of Michigan, earning his degree in 1980. He also earned a master's degree from the London School of Economics in 1985.

A Career in Journalism

Richburg spent a long time as a foreign correspondent for The Washington Post. This means he reported news from other countries. He worked in many different places around the world:

  • Southeast Asia from 1986 to 1990
  • Africa from 1991 to 1994
  • Hong Kong from 1995 to 2000
  • Paris from 2000 to 2005

He also held important roles at The Post. He was the Foreign Editor, managing news from abroad. From 2007 to 2010, he led The Post's office in New York. He also reported from China, based in Beijing and Shanghai, from 2009 to 2012.

Reporting on Major Events

Keith Richburg covered important world events. He reported on the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan. He even rode a horse through part of the Hindu Kush mountains during his reporting. He wrote about this journey in The Post.

His Book: Out of America

Richburg wrote a book called Out of America. It shares his experiences as a reporter in Africa. In the book, he describes witnessing difficult events. These included the Rwandan genocide, a civil war in Somalia, and a cholera epidemic in the Democratic Republic of Congo. His book caused some discussion in the African American community because of its views on Africa.

After The Washington Post

In 2013, Keith Richburg left The Washington Post. He then started teaching journalism. He taught international reporting at Princeton University. He was also a fellow at the Harvard Institute of Politics.

During this time, he became a visiting professor at the University of Hong Kong’s Journalism and Media Studies Centre. In 2016, he became the director of the center. He held this role until 2023.

Leading the Foreign Correspondents' Club

On February 13, 2021, Keith Richburg was chosen to be the President of the Hong Kong Foreign Correspondents' Club. This club supports journalists working in Hong Kong. His selection happened when media in Hong Kong faced challenges due to a new security law. For example, a major newspaper, Apple Daily, had recently closed. Richburg served as president until May 29, 2023.
