Where is Kelly Located?
Kelly is found along the Gros Ventre River. This river flows on the eastern side of the beautiful Jackson Hole valley. Kelly is also part of the larger Jackson area. It even has its own ZIP code, 83011, for mail delivery.

History of Kelly
The community we know as Kelly started in the late 1890s. It was first called Grovont. But in 1909, its name was changed to Kelly. This was done to avoid confusion with another nearby place that had a similar name.
The Great Kelly Flood of 1927
Kelly faced a huge challenge on May 18, 1927. The town was almost completely destroyed by a massive flood. This flood happened because a natural dam broke. This dam had formed two years earlier due to a huge Gros Ventre landslide.
Here's how it happened:
- On June 23, 1925, after many weeks of heavy rain, a massive amount of rock (about 50 million cubic yards!) slid off Sheep Mountain.
- This rock slide blocked the Gros Ventre River, creating a large natural dam.
- Water then backed up behind the dam, forming a new body of water called Lower Slide Lake.
- At first, the lake and dam seemed stable. Engineers even thought there was no danger of it collapsing.
- However, the winter of 1926–1927 brought very heavy snows.
- In May 1927, the snow melted more than usual, and there were even more weeks of heavy rain.
- On May 18, people in Kelly noticed debris floating down the river. This was a sign that the upper valley was flooding.
- Several residents quickly went to the dam. They discovered that the lake was overflowing the dam and starting to wear it away.
- A warning was quickly given, and the town's residents were able to evacuate to safety.
- The flood that followed was about 6 feet (1.8 meters) deep for at least 25 miles (40 kilometers) downstream.
- Most of Kelly was destroyed. Only the church and the schoolhouse were left standing.
- Because people were warned and evacuated, only six people lost their lives in the flood.
- The flood also damaged farms and parts of the community of Wilson, which is about 14 miles (23 kilometers) downstream on the Snake River.
