History of Kensington Village

How Kensington Became a Village

Kensington officially became a village on November 7, 1921. All the residents voted for it to become an incorporated village. The first leaders were chosen on November 28, 1921. Byron Eldred was elected as the first Mayor.

Naming the Village

The village was named after Kensington Gardens in London, England. Even the main entrance gates to the village look like the famous gates in London.

Village Leaders and Safety

Many mayors in Kensington have served for a long time. The mayor also acts as the head of the police. Kensington was first created as a special place for famous people to live. It is known as one of the safest places to live in the U.S. and still is today.

In 2017, a website called Niche.com said Kensington was the #1 "Best Place to Live in New York." It was also ranked the "Best Suburb to Live in New York."

Community Features

In August 1915, a special waterfront park was given to the Kensington Association. This park had a 500-foot sandy beach on Manhasset Bay. It also featured small lakes, a boat dock, tennis courts, and a very large freshwater swimming pool.

To keep the area residential, a special rule was made. This rule, called a restrictive covenant, stopped businesses and factories from being built there. A group called the Kensington Association was also started to help with upkeep and police protection.
