Discovering Kerman's Past
How Kerman Began
Kerman started around 1891. The Southern Pacific Railroad built a new train line. This line connected the towns of Tracy and Fresno. A water tank and pump were set up along this line. This spot became the very beginning of Kerman.
The area was first named Collis. This name honored Collis Potter Huntington, who was the president of the railroad. The first person to live there was a caretaker. His job was to keep the water tank full for the steam trains. He later left because it was too lonely. He said he rarely saw anyone except the busy train crews.
Train Robbery in Collis
On August 3, 1892, a train robbery happened in Collis. The robbers were Chris Evans, John Sontag, and George Contant. Contant was later sent to Folsom State Prison. Evans and Sontag became fugitives for ten months. They were eventually caught in 1893 after a big event called the Battle of Stone Corral.
From Collis to Kerman
A very rich company, the Bank of California, bought a large amount of land. They bought land in many counties across California. The dry land around Collis seemed like a good investment. This land became their part of Fresno County.
Later, the bank faced problems and had to sell its property. Two businessmen from Los Angeles, William G. Kerckhoff and Jacob Mansar, became interested. They saw a chance to get plenty of water. This water came from the new Enterprise Canal, which got its water from the Kings River.
These men decided to rename the area. They combined the first three letters of each of their last names. "Ker" from Kerckhoff and "man" from Mansar. This is how the name "Kerman" was created. They encouraged people from Scandinavia and Germany to settle there.
The Collis post office opened in 1894. It closed in 1899 but reopened in 1904. In 1906, it was officially renamed Kerman. Kerman officially became a city in 1946. The local Kerman Telephone company used an old-fashioned telephone switchboard. It was the last of its kind in California. They stopped using it in 1991.
