Kesago Nakajima (中島 今朝吾, Nakajima Kesago, 15 June 1881 – 28 October 1945) was a lieutenant general in the Imperial Japanese Army. He served during important conflicts like the Russo-Japanese War and the Second Sino-Japanese War. His military career spanned from 1903 to 1939.

Early Life and Military Training
Kesago Nakajima was born on June 15, 1881, in Oita prefecture, Japan. From a young age, he attended special military schools. He worked hard and graduated from the 15th class of the Imperial Japanese Army Academy in 1903.
Serving in the Russo-Japanese War
After finishing his training, Nakajima served as a soldier in the Russo-Japanese War. This war took place from 1904 to 1905. It was a major conflict between the Russian Empire and the Empire of Japan.
Further Education and Promotions
After the war, Nakajima continued his studies at the Army War College (Japan). He completed his studies there in 1913. From 1918 to 1923, he worked in France as a military attaché. This role meant he represented his country's military in a foreign land. In April 1932, he was promoted to major general. He then became the commander of the Maizuru Army District. This area was important for defending Japan's coast along the Sea of Japan.
Key Military Roles
From 1933 to 1936, Nakajima was in charge of the Narashino Chemical Warfare School. In March 1936, he was promoted again to lieutenant general. He also became a Provost Marshal, a high-ranking military police officer.
Role in the Second Sino-Japanese War
When the Second Sino-Japanese War began, Nakajima was given command of the IJA 16th Division. His division took part in the Second Shanghai Incident. They also participated in operations in Hebei, China.
The Battle of Nanjing
In late 1937, Nakajima was an important commander during the Battle of Nanjing. This was a very difficult and tragic period for the city's people. His division was involved in the events that followed the capture of Nanjing.
Later Commands and Retirement
After Nanjing, Nakajima's division was involved in the Battle of Wuhan. Later, from 1938 to 1939, he was transferred to command the Japanese Fourth Army in Manchukuo. In 1939, Nakajima was called back to Japan. He retired from the army in September 1939. He passed away in October 1945 due to illness.
