Clifford Ian Simpson, born on July 16, 1996, is better known as Kevin Abstract. He is an American rapper, singer, and songwriter. He is also famous for helping start the music group Brockhampton.
He released his first album, MTV1987, in 2014. This album was well-liked by music critics. His other albums include American Boyfriend: A Suburban Love Story (2016), Arizona Baby (2019), and Blanket (2023).

Early Life
Kevin Abstract was born in Corpus Christi, Texas. He started making music when he was 11 years old. When he was 15, he moved to Georgia to live with his sister.
Music Career
Brockhampton: 2009-2022
In 2009, when he was 13, Kevin Abstract posted online looking for other artists. He wanted to form a group called AliveSinceForever. Later, in 2014, he and some members of AliveSinceForever started a new group called Brockhampton in San Marcos, Texas.
In 2016, Brockhampton released their first mixtape, All-American Trash. The group moved to Los Angeles in 2017. They became very popular with their Saturation album series. This included Saturation, Saturation II, and Saturation III.
In 2018, Brockhampton signed with RCA Records. Their first album with RCA, Iridescence, became their first album to reach number one on the Billboard 200 chart. Their next album, Ginger (2019), featured the very popular song "Sugar".
In January 2022, after releasing Roadrunner: New Light, New Machine (2021), the group announced they would take a break. They also canceled their remaining tour dates. The final Brockhampton albums, The Family and TM, came out in November 2022.
Early Solo Work: 2013
In May 2013, Kevin Abstract released a song called "Angels". He worked on this song with Dom McLennon, who was also in AliveSinceForever and Brockhampton. In July, he was featured on a song called "Rabbits" by Ameer Vann. In September, Kevin Abstract released his first collection of songs, an EP (Extended Play).
MTV1987: 2014-2015
Kevin Abstract started working on his first album in early 2014. He worked with Romil Hemnani, a producer from Brockhampton. On April 1, 2014, he released the first song from the album, "Save". The second song came out in May.
His album, MTV1987, was released on July 15, 2014. Many music websites and magazines gave it good reviews. After the album came out, Kevin Abstract made a music video for his song "Hell/Heroina". Fans helped pay for the video through a Kickstarter campaign. The video was released in November 2014.
In June 2015, another video for "Save" was released.
American Boyfriend: A Suburban Love Story: 2016-2017
In March 2016, Kevin Abstract went on tour in England with the band The Neighbourhood. He performed new songs from his upcoming album. He later toured with The Neighbourhood in the US during May and June.
In June, he announced that his new album would be called American Boyfriend: A Suburban Love Story. He promised fans it would still be released that year.
Kevin Abstract and other Brockhampton members appeared in a TV show called American Boyband. It started on June 8, 2017, on Viceland. The show followed Kevin Abstract on his first tour in North America. It also showed what other Brockhampton members were doing back home in Los Angeles.
Arizona Baby: 2018-2019
In June 2018, Kevin Abstract hinted at a new project called "ambfII". This likely meant "American Boyfriend II". In October, he tweeted "american boyfriend," teasing fans again. On March 19, 2019, he tweeted a photo that looked like a new album cover.
In early April, he mentioned wanting to release a lot of music in 2019. He also said he might want to focus on filmmaking later. Over the next few weeks, he shared more hints about his third album, Arizona Baby. The album was released in three parts. He released "Big Wheels" on April 9, 2019. The first part of Arizona Baby came out on April 11, with a music video for "Georgia". The second part, Ghettobaby, was released on April 18, with a video for "Baby Boy". The full album was released on April 25, along with a music video for "Peach".
Blanket: 2020-Present
On January 18, 2021, Kevin Abstract teased a song called "It's Alright". He also teased "Sierra Nights" in February 2021. He played parts of these songs and others on Instagram.
In May 2021, he shared snippets of "Tucker" and "Seven Days a Week". He also shared a snippet for "4Sure" and "Everything".
On July 16, 2021, Kevin Abstract released a song called "Slugger". It featured artists $NOT and slowthai. On August 18, 2021, he released "Sierra Nights" with Ryan Beatty.
On October 5, 2023, he released the song "Blanket". This song had more of a rock sound and less traditional rap. It was his first music video not released on Brockhampton's YouTube channel. On October 11, he announced that his album Blanket would be released on November 3.
Other Projects
In 2021, Kevin Abstract started a clothing brand called Video Store Apparel (VSA). He started it with Romil Hemnani, another member of Brockhampton. Stylist Nick Holiday often works with them.
Kevin Abstract also worked as a creative consultant for the second season of the HBO show Euphoria.
Musical Influences
Kevin Abstract has mentioned several artists who inspired his music. For his album MTV1987, he was influenced by Frank Ocean, Justin Timberlake, and Kid Cudi. Other artists who influenced his music include Kanye West, Pink Floyd, Radiohead, Childish Gambino, Outkast, Lana Del Rey, and Tyler, the Creator. Tyler, the Creator's group, Odd Future, was a big inspiration for Brockhampton.
