Khalid Khannouchi (Arabic: خالد خنّوشي) was born on September 12, 1971. He is a retired long-distance runner. Khalid was born in Morocco but later became an American citizen. He is famous for holding the world record in the marathon. He also held the fastest time for the 20 km distance on the road.
Khalid is one of only five men who have broken the marathon world record more than once. He is also one of only five runners to break their own marathon world record! This shows how incredibly talented and consistent he was.
Khalid moved to Brooklyn, New York City in 1992. This happened after he had some disagreements with the Moroccan athletics group about training costs. In 1996, he married Sandra Inoa, an American. Sandra became his coach and also worked as his agent. They made their home in Ossining, New York.
On May 2, 2000, Khalid became a naturalized citizen of the United States. He first became widely known in 1997. He won the 1997 Chicago Marathon by more than a minute. His time was 2:07:10, which broke the old course record.
As of 2022, Khalid still holds the American record for the marathon. He set this record with a time of 2:05:38 at the London Marathon in 2002.
Khalid officially stopped running professionally on March 27, 2012. He had been dealing with foot injuries since 2003. He explained that his feet kept causing him pain. He felt he could no longer train hard enough to compete at a high level.
