Kim Kyu-sik (born January 29, 1881 – died December 10, 1950) was an important Korean politician and scholar. He played a big role in the Korean independence movement. This was a time when Korea was trying to become free from Japanese rule. Kim Kyu-sik was a leader in the Provisional Government of the Republic of Korea. This government worked for Korea's freedom while it was under Japanese control.

He held many important jobs in the provisional government. These included foreign minister, ambassador, and education minister. He was also the vice president from 1940 until 1947. Kim Kyu-sik was known by several nicknames, such as Usa and Chukchok.

Kim Kyu-sik was born in Dongnae, which is now part of Busan. He became an orphan at a young age. An American missionary named H.G. Underwood helped him. Kim started studying with him when he was six years old. He was given the Christian name "Johann."

Later, Kim traveled to the United States. He earned a bachelor's degree from Roanoke College in 1903. The next year, he got a master's degree in English literature from Princeton University.

In 1905, Kim returned to Korea and taught in many places. In 1910, Japan took control of Korea. Because of this, Kim left Korea and moved to China in 1913.

In 1919, Kim Kyu-sik went to the Paris Peace Conference. This was a big meeting after World War I. He went there to ask for Korea's independence from Japan. He was sent by Lyuh Woon-Hyung and Chang Duk-soo. They had started a group called Sinhan Cheongnyeondang in Shanghai. Sadly, his efforts in Paris did not succeed.

In 1935, the Korean National Revolutionary Party was formed in Shanghai. This party brought together different Korean nationalist groups. Kim Kyu-sik was one of its main organizers, along with Kim Won-bong and Cho Soang.

Kim was a very important member of the Provisional Government of the Republic of Korea. This government was based in Shanghai. He became its Vice-President. Kim was very good at English. He even taught English to other members of the Provisional Government.

After Korea's Liberation

After World War II ended in 1945, Korea was finally free from Japanese rule. Kim Kyu-sik returned to Korea to help create a new independent country. At that time, the southern part of Korea was controlled by the United States Army Military Government in Korea. The northern part was controlled by the Soviet Civil Authority.

Kim was liked by the American leader, John R. Hodge. Hodge saw Kim and Lyuh Woon-Hyung as moderate leaders. In 1947, the United States wanted the United Nations to decide Korea's future. The UN voted to allow elections in South Korea. Kim Kyu-sik and Kim Gu were against this because the North would not participate.

Later Life and Death

Kim tried to help North and South Korea reunite, but his efforts failed. After this, he stopped being active in politics. When the Korean War started in 1950, he was taken to North Korea. He reportedly died near Manpo in the far north on December 10, 1950.

In May 1988, Kim Kyu-sik received a special honor. He was given the Republic of Korea Medal of Order of Merit for National Foundation. This is the highest award for civilians in South Korea. In 1998, he was also given North Korea's National Reunification Prize.
