How Kirbyville Started
Kirbyville began in 1895 when a railroad line, the Gulf, Beaumont, and Kansas City railroad, reached this area. The town was first named Kirby after John Henry Kirby, a lumber businessman. He planned to use the location to sell his lumber.
The post office opened in the same year. However, the name was soon changed to Kirbyville because another town already existed called Kirby. The town officially became a city in 1926.

Many buildings in the city were damaged, and some were even destroyed. Many residents in Kirbyville were without electricity for several weeks after the storm.
