Kirsty Gilmour was born on September 21, 1993. She is a Scottish badminton player. She has played for both Scotland and Great Britain in her career.

Badminton Career

Kirsty Gilmour has achieved many great things in badminton. She is known for her strong performances in major tournaments.

Commonwealth Games Success

In 2014, Kirsty won a silver medal at the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow. She was the first Scottish woman to reach the singles final in badminton at these games. She lost to Michelle Li from Canada in the final match. In 2012, she was also named Scottish Young Sports Personality of the Year, sharing the award with swimmer Craig Benson.

Four years later, at the 2018 Commonwealth Games in Gold Coast, Australia, Kirsty won a bronze medal.

European Championships and Games

Kirsty has also done very well at the European Championships. In 2016, she won a silver medal at the European Championship in France. She played against Carolina Marín in the final. The next year, in 2017, she again reached the final of the European Championship in Denmark, winning another silver medal. She also won silver medals in 2022 and 2024, and a bronze medal in 2021.

At the European Games, Kirsty won a silver medal in 2019 in Minsk, Belarus. She added a bronze medal at the 2023 European Games in Poland.

Olympic Appearances

Kirsty has represented Great Britain at the Olympic Games multiple times.

  • She competed at the 2016 Olympics in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. She won her first match but was knocked out in the group stage after losing her second match.
  • At the 2020 Summer Olympics in Tokyo (held in 2021), she won one match but did not advance past the group stage.
  • She also played at the 2024 Summer Olympics in Paris. She won her first match but then lost to a higher-ranked player, ending her tournament in the group stage.

Other Tournament Wins

Kirsty has won many other badminton tournaments around the world. She has won titles in the BWF World Tour series, which are important tournaments organized by the Badminton World Federation. She also has many wins from the BWF Grand Prix and International Challenge/Series events.
