What "Klahanie" Means
The name "Klahanie" comes from a language called Chinook Jargon. This language was once used by different groups of people, including Native Americans and traders, in the Pacific Northwest. In Chinook Jargon, "Klahanie" means "outside" or "the outdoors."
This name was first thought of in the 1970s for a different building project. That project was planned for an area that is now the city of Mill Creek.
History of Klahanie
Klahanie first opened in 1985. It was one of the first "planned communities" in the Pacific Northwest region. A planned community is like a neighborhood that is designed and built all at once, with homes, parks, and other facilities carefully laid out.
This community was built on about 884 acres of land and had 3,200 homes. The idea was to have smaller yards for each home but lots of shared green spaces for everyone. All the homes were finished by 1994.
Becoming Part of a City
Klahanie is located between the cities of Issaquah and Sammamish. For many years, there was a discussion about which city Klahanie should join. This process is called annexation, where a smaller area becomes part of a larger city.
In the early 2000s, the government of King County said that Klahanie needed to choose one of the cities to join. In 2005, people in Klahanie voted to join Issaquah. However, they voted against taking on some of Issaquah's city debt. Because of this, Issaquah decided not to annex Klahanie in 2006. They didn't want to pay $17 million for road improvements.
Another vote happened in 2014 for Klahanie residents to join Issaquah. This vote was very close and failed by only 32 votes. After this, Issaquah agreed to let Sammamish try to annex Klahanie. In April 2015, Sammamish held an annexation vote, and 87 percent of Klahanie residents approved it!
Klahanie officially became part of Sammamish on January 1, 2016. This made Sammamish's population grow from about 49,980 to 61,250 people.
