Playing for Football Clubs
Kostas Choumis started his professional football journey in 1933. He played for Ethnikos Piraeus, a team from his hometown. He quickly became a key player for the team.
Early Success in Greece
In the 1934–1935 season, Kostas helped Ethnikos Piraeus win the South Division championship. He scored 15 goals in just 10 matches, showing his amazing scoring skills. The next year, in 1936, he became the top scorer in the National Championship. He scored 12 goals in 14 matches, proving he was one of the best strikers around.
Moving to Romania
In 1936, Kostas moved to Romania to play for Venus București. He had impressed them a year earlier by scoring two goals against the Romanian national team. His first match in Romania's top league, Divizia A, was against Telefoane București.
Kostas made history as the first player to score a goal for a Romanian team in a European competition. This happened in 1937 during the Mitropa Cup. He scored the first goal for Venus București against Ujpest FC from Hungary. Even though Venus lost the match 4–6, Kostas scored another goal for his team.
Winning Championships
Kostas Choumis won the Divizia A championship three times with Venus București. However, he never won the Romanian Cup. In the 1940 Romanian Cup final, he played in the last three matches. In one of the replays, which ended 4-4, Kostas scored two goals himself! But in the end, Rapid București won the final.
Kostas stayed with Venus during World War II. After the war, in 1946, he moved to Rapid București. He played there for half a season. Then, he joined IT Arad, where he played only one game but still won the championship with them. In 1947, he played for Karres Mediaş for a season. He played for this team until 1950. After a short return to IT Arad, he stopped playing football professionally.
Playing for National Teams
Kostas Choumis played for two different national teams: Greece and Romania.
Playing for Greece
Kostas made his first appearance for the Greek national team in December 1934. This was during a Balkan Cup match against Yugoslavia. A few days later, he scored his first international goal in a match against Romania.
In the 1935 Balkan Cup, he scored two goals in one game twice! First against Bulgaria and then against Romania. These goals caught the attention of the Romanian club Venus București. He scored a total of 7 goals in the Balkan Cup, making him one of the top goal scorers in the competition's history. His last match for Greece was in June 1936 against Egypt, where he scored Greece's only goal.
Playing for Romania
After living in Romania for five years, Kostas also got to play for the Romanian national team. His first game for Romania was in 1941 against Slovakia. He scored the first goal for Romania in that match, and they won 3–2. His last international game was in June 1943, also against Slovakia, which ended in a 2-2 draw.
