Kupreanof (pronounced Coop-ree-an-off) is a very small city in Alaska. Its name in the Tlingit language is Aansadaak’w. It is located on the eastern side of Kupreanof Island. This island is part of the Petersburg Borough.

In 2020, only 21 people lived in Kupreanof. This makes it the smallest official city in the entire state of Alaska.

History of Kupreanof

Kupreanof officially became a city in 1975. One of the people who helped make it a city was Harold Bergman. He used to be a school principal in Petersburg.

Long ago, in the early to mid-1900s, Kupreanof was known as West Petersburg. It was a busy place where people raised animals for fur and worked as commercial fishermen. Over time, many residents moved to Petersburg, which is a larger city nearby.

When the Petersburg Borough was formed, Kupreanof stayed its own separate city. Before this, it was a self-governing city within the larger Petersburg Census Area. Robert "Bobby" Dolan was the mayor of Kupreanof for more than 40 years.

Kupreanof is located at 56°49′21″N 132°58′57″W / 56.82250°N 132.98250°W / 56.82250; -132.98250. It sits right across the Wrangell Narrows from Petersburg. Petersburg is on Mitkof Island.

The city covers a total area of about 12.04 square kilometers (4.65 square miles). Most of this area, about 7.82 square kilometers (3.02 square miles), is land. The rest, about 4.21 square kilometers (1.63 square miles), is water.

Kupreanof first appeared in the U.S. Census in 1930. Back then, it was called West Petersburg. It kept that name until the 1970 census. In 1975, it officially changed its name to Kupreanof and became an incorporated city.

In 2000, a census (a count of the population) showed that 23 people lived in Kupreanof. These people lived in 12 different homes, and 6 of these were families.

  • Some homes (16.7%) had children under 18 living there.
  • Half of the homes (50%) were married couples living together.
  • Half of the homes (50%) were made up of people who were not families.
  • Some homes (16.7%) had someone living alone who was 65 years old or older.
