La Casa de Carrión is an old Adobe house built in 1868. It was constructed by a man named Saturnino Carrión. Today, you can find this historic home in La Verne, California.

This special house was named a California Historic Landmark (No. 386) on December 14, 1945. When it was first built, La Casa de Carrión was part of a very large piece of land called the Rancho San Jose. This land was owned by Saturnino Carrión's uncle, Ygnacio Palomares, and his business partner, Ricardo Vejar. Ygnacio Palomares had built his own adobe home, the Ygnacio Palomares Adobe, nearby in what is now Pomona, California in 1855.

The land for La Casa de Carrión was a gift to Saturnino Carrión from his uncle, Ygnacio Palomares. The adobe house was built in an "L" shape, with the front facing north. Saturnino Carrión, his wife Dolores, and their three sons moved into the house once it was finished. Their sons were Ramon del Refugio, Julian, and Frank. Saturnino and Dolores got married on May 15, 1865, at the Plaza Church in Pueblo Los Angeles. Later, their daughters Josefa, Agatha, and Louise were born at La Casa de Carrión. Saturnino Carrión raised livestock (farm animals) on his ranch at La Casa de Carrión. Saturnino grew up in the City of Los Angeles. After his father passed away, Julian continued to manage the ranch.

The Rancho San Jose Story

The land that became Rancho San Jose was originally part of the Mission San Gabriel. In 1834, the Mexican government took control of mission lands. This was part of a plan called the secularization decree of 1833.

In 1837, the Mexican Governor, Juan Bautista Alvarado, gave this large area of land to Ygnacio Palomares and Ricardo Vejar. Both men were Californios, which means they were people of Spanish descent born in California. Their parents had come from New Spain (which is now Mexico). The Rancho San Jose, run by Palomares and Vejar, covered a huge area. This land now includes many towns you might know. These towns are Pomona, LaVerne, San Dimas, Diamond Bar, Azusa, Covina, Walnut, Glendora, and Claremont.

From Rancho to Lordsburg

In 1887, La Casa de Carrión became part of a new town. This town was called Lordsburg. It was named after the new owner of the land around the ranch, Isaac W. Lord.

Today, La Casa de Carrión is still a private home in La Verne, California. A man named Paul E. Traweek carefully restored the old house in 1951.
