About La Lanzada Beach
This amazing beach is found on the southwest side of a narrow strip of land called an isthmus. An isthmus is like a natural bridge connecting a peninsula to the mainland. La Lanzada beach is close to the entrance of the Pontevedra estuary. An estuary is where a river meets the sea.
How Big is the Beach?
La Lanzada is a very long beach. It stretches for about 2.5 kilometers (1.5 miles). If you include the nearby beaches of Areas Gordas and Lapa, it's even longer, over three kilometers! This makes it the fourth longest beach in all of Galicia.
The beach is so big that different parts of it have their own names:
- Areas Gordas (which means Coarse Sands)
- Lapa Beach (meaning Limpet Beach)
- Lanzada Beach (meaning Pier Beach)
Many tourists visit La Lanzada during the summer months. It is one of the most popular and largest beaches in Galicia.
Protecting Nature
La Lanzada beach is surrounded by beautiful natural areas. These areas include important dunes. Dunes are hills of sand formed by the wind. These dunes are protected as part of the Natura 2000 network. This network helps protect important natural places across Europe. The dunes are a special ecosystem that needs to be kept safe.
Fun Things to Do
Because La Lanzada is an open sea beach, the waves can often be quite big. This makes it a perfect spot for exciting water sports!
Water Sports and More
You can try sports like surfing and windsurfing here. Kiteboarding is also very popular. The open sea and strong winds make it a great place for these activities.
