History of Lakefield
Lakefield was first planned out in 1879. This happened when the railroad tracks were built to reach that area. The city got its name because it is close to Heron Lake. A post office opened in Lakefield in 1880. The city officially became a city in 1887.
Geography and Location
Lakefield is located in the state of Minnesota. The United States Census Bureau says the city covers about 1.28 square miles (3.32 square kilometers). All of this area is land.
Minnesota State Highway 86 is the main road that goes through Lakefield. You can also find Exit 64 of Interstate 90 about two miles south of the city.
