Getting Around Lamplugh
The main road, called the A5086, goes right through Lamplugh. It connects Cockermouth in the north to Egremont in the south. This makes it easy to travel to nearby towns.
Years ago, there was also a railway line that ran through Lamplugh. It had a station at a place called Wright Green. The trains stopped carrying passengers in 1931. The railway line closed completely in 1954.
Lamplugh's Unique Layout
Unlike many villages, Lamplugh doesn't have one clear center. The main church, St. Michael's Church, is built on the highest spot. However, the local pub, the Lamplugh Tip Inn, is over a mile away. It's located on the A5086 road.
School and Surroundings
The local primary school, Lamplugh School, is in a small area called Kirkland. The Lamplugh civil parish is quite large. It includes Kirkland and Eskett. Until recently, it also included parts of Ennerdale Bridge and Rowrah.
Nature and Fun Activities
Lamplugh is right next to the Lake District National Park. Some parts of the village are inside the park. However, most of the homes are just outside the park boundary. This means houses here are often cheaper than those inside the park, like in Loweswater.
The roads leading from St. Michael's Church towards Loweswater and Ennerdale form part of the national park boundary. The park itself is to the east of these roads.
Lamplugh is a great place to start many walks. It's also on the famous Sea to Sea / C2C / Coast to Coast Cycle Route. This popular cycling path follows the roads that make up the national park boundary.
Lamplugh in Books
Lamplugh has even appeared in books! The famous author Melvyn Bragg wrote two novels, "The Hired Man" and "Without a City Wall." In these books, he renamed Lamplugh to "Crossbridge."
