Lanark and Hamilton East is a special area in Scotland that elects one person to the UK Parliament. This elected person is called a Member of Parliament (MP). They represent the people living in this area.
This area was first used for elections in 2005. It was created from parts of older areas like Clydesdale and Hamilton. The way the MP is chosen is called "first past the post." This means the candidate who gets the most votes wins, even if they don't get more than half of all the votes.
For a long time, the Labour Party usually won here. But in 2015, the Scottish National Party (SNP) won the seat. This was a big change because the SNP won many seats in Scotland that year. Two years later, in 2017, the election was incredibly close. The SNP's Angela Crawley won by only 266 votes, with the Conservatives and Labour very close behind. It was one of the closest elections in the UK since 1945!
Soon, the boundaries of this area will change. This means some towns will join or leave the area. When this happens, the constituency will get a new name: Hamilton and Clyde Valley. This new area will be used for the next big election.
