The Isthmus of Panama is a land bridge whose appearance 3 million years ago allowed the Great American Interchange.

A land bridge is a narrow strip of land. It connects two larger land areas that are usually separated by water. You can think of it like a natural bridge. Sometimes, a land bridge is also called an isthmus.

Land bridges are very important in biogeography. This is the study of where living things are found on Earth. When a land bridge appears, animals and plants can cross it. This lets them move to new places. But when the sea level rises, the land bridge might disappear underwater. Then, it becomes much harder for living things to cross. If a group of animals or plants gets separated by water, they might slowly change over time. This can lead to speciation, which means a new species forms.

How Do Land Bridges Form?

Several things can cause a land bridge to appear or disappear.

Earth's Moving Plates

The Earth's surface is made of huge pieces called tectonic plates. These plates are always moving, very slowly. Sometimes, this movement can cause land to rise up. This can create a land bridge. Other times, the land might sink.

Changing Sea Levels

The level of the ocean can change a lot. When sea levels fall, parts of the continental shelf (the shallow area of land extending from a continent) can become dry land. This creates a land bridge. Scientists are still learning all the reasons why sea levels change.

Ice Ages and Rebound

During an ice age, huge amounts of water get frozen into glaciers and ice sheets. This causes global sea levels to drop. When the ice melts after an ice age, the sea level rises again. Also, when the heavy ice melts, the land that was pressed down by the ice can slowly rise up. This is called "post-glacial rebound." This rising land can sometimes form or expose a land bridge.

Famous Land Bridges

Throughout Earth's history, several important land bridges have appeared and disappeared. They have played a big role in how animals and plants spread around the world.

  • The Bering land bridge: This famous land bridge connected Asia with North America. It appeared when sea levels dropped during the last ice age. Many animals, and even early humans, used it to cross between continents. It went underwater when the ice melted.
  • Doggerland: This was a large area of land in the southern North Sea. It connected the island of Great Britain to mainland Europe during the last ice age. Early humans lived on Doggerland before it was covered by the sea.
  • The Isthmus of Panama: This land bridge appeared about three million years ago. It connected North America and South America. Its formation led to the Great American Interchange. This was a huge event where many animals moved between the two continents.
  • The Adam's Bridge (also known as Rama Setu): This is a chain of shoals and islands. It connects India and Sri Lanka. It is believed to have been a land bridge in the past.
