Lara Gut-Behrami (born April 27, 1991) is a famous alpine ski racer from Switzerland. She competes in the FIS Alpine Ski World Cup, which is a series of top-level ski races. Lara is especially good at fast races like downhill and Super-G.

She won a gold medal in the Super-G event at the 2022 Winter Olympics in Beijing. Lara has won 45 World Cup races in different types of skiing. This makes her one of the best alpine skiers ever!

Lara was born in Sorengo, Switzerland. Her dad, Pauli Gut, is Swiss, and her mom, Gabriella Almici, is Italian. Lara started her first official ski races when she was just 15 years old in December 2006.

At the Alpine Youth World Championship in 2007, she won a silver medal in the downhill race. In the same year, she became the Swiss national champion in Super-G. She was the second youngest person ever to win this title!

Starting Her World Cup Career

Lara joined the World Cup circuit in December 2007. She raced in a giant slalom event in Austria. In January 2008, she won four races in a row in the Europa Cup. This is another important ski competition.

In her very first World Cup downhill race in February 2008, Lara finished third. This was amazing because she even fell near the finish line! The next day, she placed fifth in the Super-G. Because of her great start, Lara joined the main World Cup team for the 2009 season.

First World Cup Wins and Medals

Lara won her first World Cup race on December 20, 2008. It was a Super-G race in Switzerland. She was only 17 years old, making her the youngest skier to win a World Cup Super-G race.

At the 2009 World Championships in France, Lara won two silver medals. She earned them in the downhill and combined events. This happened more than two months before her 18th birthday!

Dealing with Injuries

In September 2009, Lara had a serious fall during training. She dislocated her hip and had to miss the entire 2010 ski season. This meant she couldn't compete in the 2010 Olympic Games.

She came back strong for the 2011 season. Lara finished on the podium four times, including a Super-G victory in Austria.

Olympic and World Championship Success

Lara won her first Olympic medal in the 2014 Winter Olympics in Sochi, Russia. She took home the bronze medal in the downhill race. In the World Cup that year, she won the Super-G season title. She also finished third overall in the World Cup standings.

At the 2017 World Championships in Switzerland, Lara won a bronze medal in the Super-G. Sadly, she injured her left knee in the next event, which ended her season early.

In February 2020, Lara won a World Cup downhill race in Switzerland. This was her first win in over two years.

Becoming a World Champion

The 2020–2021 season was one of Lara's best. She won four Super-G World Cup races in a row. At the World Championships in Italy, she showed how strong she was. She won her first world title in the Super-G and a bronze in the downhill.

Even more surprisingly, she won the giant slalom race too! This was a very close race, and she won by just 0.02 seconds. Lara became only the second Swiss woman to win two gold medals at a single World Championship.

Personal Life

Lara is very good at languages. She can speak Italian, German, French, and English. She also knows some Spanish.

In July 2018, Lara married Valon Behrami, who is a Swiss football (soccer) player. After they got married, she started using the name Gut-Behrami.
