Lara Gut-Behrami (born April 27, 1991) is a super talented alpine ski racer from Switzerland. She competes in all types of ski races, but she's especially good at fast events like downhill and Super-G. Lara won a gold medal in the Super-G at the 2022 Winter Olympics in Beijing.

She has won 48 World Cup races, which makes her one of the best alpine skiers ever! She's the first woman to win at least ten World Cup races in three different skiing styles. With six Super-G titles and many wins, she's considered the most successful Super-G skier of all time.

Lara's Skiing Journey

Lara was born in Sorengo, a town in Canton Ticino, Switzerland. Her father, Pauli Gut, is Swiss, and her mother, Gabriella Almici, is a masseuse.

Lara started competing in FIS races when she was just 15 years old in December 2006. At the Alpine Youth World Championship in 2007, she won a silver medal in downhill. That same year, she became the Swiss national champion in Super-G. She was the second youngest champion ever!

Starting in the World Cup

In late 2007, Lara made her first appearance in a World Cup race. It was a giant slalom event in Austria. In January 2008, she won four Europa Cup races in a row.

On February 2, 2008, Lara competed in her first World Cup downhill race. She finished in third place, even though she fell near the finish line! The next day, she placed fifth in the Super-G. After this, she joined the main World Cup team for the 2009 season.

First World Cup Wins

Lara won her first World Cup race on December 20, 2008. It was a Super-G race in Switzerland. She was only 17 years old, making her the youngest skier to ever win a World Cup Super-G race.

At the 2009 World Championships in France, Lara won two silver medals. She earned them in the downhill and Super Combined events, all before her 18th birthday.

Dealing with Injuries

In September 2009, Lara had a training accident and dislocated her hip. This injury meant she had to miss the entire 2010 Olympic Games in Vancouver.

She returned for the 2011 season and quickly got back on the podium. She won a Super-G race in Austria in January. After the 2011 season, Lara changed her ski sponsor from Atomic to Rossignol.

In December 2012, Lara won her first World Cup downhill race in France. She was very fast, beating other top skiers.

Olympic Medals and World Titles

Lara won her first Olympic medal, a bronze, in the downhill event at the 2014 Sochi Olympics. She also won the Super-G season title in the World Cup that year.

In May 2015, Lara switched ski equipment brands again, this time to Head.

At the 2017 World Championships in Switzerland, Lara won a bronze medal in the Super-G. Sadly, she injured her left knee in the next event, which ended her season early.

In February 2020, Lara won her first World Cup race in over two years. It was a downhill race in Switzerland.

The 2020–2021 season was one of her best. She won four Super-G World Cup races in a row. At the World Championships in Italy, she won her first world title in Super-G. She also won a bronze medal in downhill. Surprisingly, she won the giant slalom too, becoming the second Swiss woman to win two gold medals in one championship.

At the 2025 World Championships in Austria, she won a silver medal in the new team combined event. This was her first medal in combined in 16 years.

Lara announced that she will retire from competitive skiing after the 2025–2026 season.

Personal Life

Lara is very good with languages! She can speak Italian, German, French, and English, and she also knows some Spanish.

In July 2018, she married football player Valon Behrami. Since then, she has used the name Gut-Behrami in her competitions.
