History of Sorengo
Sorengo was first written about in the year 1189. Back then, it was called Sourengo. At that time, the S. Lorenzo Cathedral in Lugano gained the right to collect tithes (a type of tax, usually a tenth of what people earned or produced) from the area.
In the later part of the Middle Ages, different groups and important families owned land or had rights in Sorengo. Sorengo was first called an independent municipality in 1298. The town of Sorengo also took turns with Lugano and Loreto as the meeting place for the General Council of the Lugano city and valley.
The people of Sorengo were part of the Lugano parish (a church district) until 1776, when they got their own separate parish. The S. Maria Assunta church in Sorengo dates back to the late 1000s, but it was first mentioned in writing in 1298. It has been rebuilt and updated many times over the centuries. In 1565, some monks started a Capuchin monastery near the church.
Since the 1950s, Sorengo has changed a lot. It used to be a quiet farming village, but now it's a commuter town for people who work in the bigger city of Lugano. Several important places have opened in Sorengo, including a children's charity (since 1920), the S. Anna Hospital (since 1934), and an American private university called Franklin University Switzerland (since 1986).
