Las Heras is a special area, like a county, located in the northwest part of Mendoza Province in Argentina. It's home to about 183,000 people and covers a large area of 8,955 km2 (3,458 sq mi). The main city, also called Las Heras, is about 1,095 km (680 mi) away from Argentina's capital city. You can also find the Governor Francisco Gabrielli International Airport, an international airport, within this area.

Why is it Called Las Heras?

This area and its main city are named after a brave military leader, General Juan Gregorio de las Heras. He lived from 1780 to 1866 and was an important figure during the Argentine War of Independence.

Amazing Geography

The western part of Las Heras is naturally bordered by the huge Andes mountains. These mountains form a natural boundary between Argentina and Chile.

Mount Aconcagua: A Giant Peak

One of the most exciting parts of Las Heras Department is Mount Aconcagua. This incredible mountain stands at 6,962 metres above sea level. It holds many impressive records:

  • It is the highest mountain in all of the Americas.
  • It is the highest mountain in the Southern Hemisphere.
  • It is the highest mountain outside of the continent of Asia.

The people of Las Heras are very proud to have such an important mountain in their area. Mount Aconcagua is also one of the Seven Summits, which are the highest mountains on each continent. This brings many mountain climbers and visitors from all over the world to the region.
