Race History
For many years, the race had different sponsors and names. It was often sponsored by car companies like DaimlerChrysler and Dodge. The race is usually about 400 miles (640 km) long. However, in 2009, it was a bit longer, at 427 miles. This extra distance was added by the sponsor, Carroll Shelby International, to honor the Shelby 427 Cobra car.
One cool thing about this race is that the winner gets a special championship belt instead of a regular trophy! From 1999 to 2002, the race was also part of something called the No Bull 5 challenge.
Over the years, the race changed its name many times because of different sponsors.
- From 2001 to 2007, it was called the UAW-DaimlerChrysler 400.
- In 2008, it became the UAW-Dodge 400.
- In 2009 and 2010, Carroll Shelby International was the sponsor. The 2009 race was the Shelby 427, and the 2010 race was the Shelby American.
- From 2011 to 2017, Lowe's (through its Kobalt Tools brand) sponsored the race. It was known as the Kobalt Tools 400 (2011-2013) and then the Kobalt 400 (2014-2017).
- Since 2018, the race has been known as the Pennzoil 400.
The most recent winner of the Pennzoil 400 was Josh Berry in 2025.
