Latin American poetry facts for kids
Latin American poetry is poetry created by writers from Latin America. These poems often explore themes important to the region, like history, nature, and daily life.
Many types of poetry are popular in Latin America.
- Lyric poetry shares feelings or ideas. Some lyric poems rhyme, while others do not. Famous lyric poets include Rubén Darío, César Vallejo, Ernesto Cardenal, Gabriela Mistral, and Pablo Neruda.
- Prose poetry looks like a story or essay, written in sentences and paragraphs. But it uses poetic language and imagery. The lines do not rhyme. Jorge Luis Borges, Pablo Neruda, Octavio Paz, and Giannina Braschi wrote prose poetry.
- Epic poetry tells a long story, often about heroes or important events. These poems often feature national themes, beautiful landscapes, and local traditions. José Hernández wrote the famous epic poem Martín Fierro about cowboy life in Argentina.

A Look at Latin American Poetry History
Early Poets: The 17th Century
In the 17th century, a nun named Sor Juana Inés de la Cruz lived in Mexico. She was a brilliant writer who created deep poems about spiritual and philosophical ideas.
Important Voices: The 19th Century
The 19th century brought many famous poets. The Cuban poet José Martí wrote "Yo soy un hombre sincero" ("I'm a sincere man"). This poem later became the lyrics for the popular song "Guantanamera." Rubén Darío from Nicaragua was a leader of the modernist movement in poetry. His book "Azul" (1888) was very influential. Cesar Vallejo from Peru is considered one of the most important poets in the Spanish language. He wrote the powerful book Trilce in 1922.
Modern Masters: The 20th Century
The 20th century saw Latin American poetry gain worldwide fame. Gabriela Mistral from Chile was the first Latin American poet to win the Nobel Prize in Literature. She wrote about children, teachers, family, and love. Pablo Neruda, also from Chile, wrote the long epic poem Canto General. He was the second Latin American poet to win the Nobel Prize.
