Laura Leggett Linney (born February 5, 1964) is an American actress who has worked in movies, television, and theater. She has won many awards for her acting, including two Golden Globe Awards and four Primetime Emmy Awards. She has also been nominated for three Academy Awards and five Tony Awards, which are major awards for film and theater.
Linney started her acting career on the Broadway stage in 1990. She received Tony Award nominations for plays like The Crucible (2002) and My Name Is Lucy Barton (2020).
On television, she won her first Emmy Award for the TV movie Wild Iris (2001). She won more Emmys for the comedy show Frasier and the historical series John Adams (2008). From 2010 to 2013, she starred in the show The Big C. From 2017 to 2022, she starred in the Netflix crime show Ozark.

Early life and education
Linney was born on February 5, 1964, in Manhattan, New York City. Her mother, Ann Perse, was a nurse, and her father, Romulus Linney, was a famous playwright and professor. Linney spent summers with her father in New Hampshire, where she fell in love with acting. She started working with a local theater group when she was eleven.
In 1982, Linney graduated from the Northfield Mount Hermon School, a private school in Massachusetts. She later went to Brown University, where she studied acting. During her last year at Brown, she acted in one of her father's plays.
After graduating from Brown in 1986, Linney studied acting at the famous Juilliard School in New York City. She later received honorary doctor of fine arts degrees from both Brown University and Juilliard.
Career
1990s: Starting on Stage and Screen
Linney began her professional acting career in 1990 in a New York play. She appeared in small roles in movies like Lorenzo's Oil (1992) and Dave (1993).
In 1993, she became well-known for her role as Mary Ann Singleton in the TV series Tales of the City. She played the same character again in later series. Throughout the 1990s, she also acted in many Broadway plays.
She then acted in several thriller movies, including Congo (1995) and Primal Fear (1996). Her big break in Hollywood came in 1998 when she played the wife of Jim Carrey's character in the popular movie The Truman Show.
2000s: Awards and Major Roles
In 2000, Linney starred in the movie You Can Count on Me. Her performance was highly praised, and she was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Actress. In 2002, she won her first Emmy Award for the TV movie Wild Iris.

She played a woman dealing with a serious illness. For this role, she won a Golden Globe Award in 2011 and her fourth Emmy Award in 2013.
She continued to appear in movies, including Hyde Park on Hudson (2012) and Mr. Holmes (2015), where she acted alongside Ian McKellen. In 2016, she played the wife of pilot Chesley Sullenberger in the hit movie Sully, which also starred Tom Hanks.
From 2017 to 2022, Linney starred with Jason Bateman in the Netflix crime series Ozark. Her performance earned her nominations for several awards, including the Primetime Emmy Award.

Personal life
Linney was married to actor David Adkins from 1995 to 2000. In 2009, she married Marc Schauer. Her friend and fellow actor Liam Neeson walked her down the aisle at her wedding. In January 2014, when she was 49 years old, Linney had a son.
In 2009, Linney was a presenter at the celebration for President Barack Obama's inauguration at the Lincoln Memorial in Washington, D.C.
