Lauren Ambrose (born February 20, 1978) is an American actress. She is known for her roles in popular TV shows and movies.
Lauren became well-known for playing Claire Fisher in the HBO drama series Six Feet Under from 2001 to 2005. For this role, she was nominated for two Emmy Awards and won two Screen Actors Guild Awards. She also starred in the Apple TV+ series Servant (2019–2023) and the Showtime series Yellowjackets (2023–present).
Her movie roles include In & Out (1997), Can't Hardly Wait (1998), and Where the Wild Things Are (2009), where she voiced a character. Lauren has also performed on Broadway, playing Eliza Doolittle in My Fair Lady in 2018. She is also the lead singer of a ragtime band called Lauren Ambrose and the Leisure Class.

Early Life and Training
Lauren Ambrose was born on February 20, 1978. Her father, Frank D'Ambruoso, was a caterer, and her mother, Anne Wachtel, was an interior designer. Lauren has Italian, German, English, and Irish family roots.
She attended several schools, including Choate Rosemary Hall and Wilbur Cross High School. Lauren is also a trained opera singer. She studied voice and opera at the Boston University Tanglewood Institute during the summers of 1994 and 1995.
Lauren's Acting Journey
Starting Out in the 1990s
Lauren Ambrose began her acting career in New York theater. She appeared in an Off-Broadway play called Soulful Scream of a Chosen Son in 1990. She also had guest roles on the TV show Law & Order.
Her first movie role was in the comedy In & Out in 1997. She then had a notable role as Denise Fleming in the high school comedy film Can't Hardly Wait in 1998.
Becoming Well-Known with Six Feet Under
In 1999, Lauren had a recurring role in the teen drama Party of Five. She also starred in the horror comedy Psycho Beach Party (2000) and the drama film Swimming (2000).
Lauren gained wide recognition for her main role as Claire Fisher in the HBO drama series Six Feet Under. This show ran from 2001 to 2005. Her performance earned her two Emmy Award nominations. She also won two Screen Actors Guild Awards as part of the show's cast.
Broadway and Other Roles
In 2006, Lauren made her Broadway debut in the play Awake and Sing!. She also appeared in movies like Diggers (2006) and Starting Out in the Evening (2007).
She performed in Shakespeare in the Park productions, playing Juliet in Romeo and Juliet (2007) and Ophelia in Hamlet (2008). In 2008, she starred in the TV comedy series The Return of Jezebel James.
Lauren returned to Broadway in 2009 in the play Exit the King. That same year, she was in several films, including Cold Souls and The Other Woman. She also voiced the character KW in the fantasy film Where the Wild Things Are.
Lauren is the lead singer of her band, Lauren Ambrose and the Leisure Class. They play ragtime and dixieland jazz music.
In 2011, Lauren appeared in the science fiction series Torchwood: Miracle Day. She played Jilly Kitzinger, a clever public relations expert. For this role, she was nominated for a Saturn Award. She also produced and starred in the drama film About Sunny (2011).
Lauren continued to appear in various TV shows and movies. These included the miniseries Coma (2012) and Dig (2015). From 2016 to 2018, she had a recurring role in The X-Files.
Recent Work: Broadway and Servant
In March 2018, Lauren took on the main role of Eliza Doolittle in the Broadway revival of My Fair Lady. Her performance received great reviews. She was nominated for a Tony Award for Best Actress in a Musical and won an Outer Critics Circle Award.
In October 2018, Lauren began starring as Dorothy Turner in the psychological horror series Servant. This show was produced by M. Night Shyamalan and aired on Apple TV+. The series ran for four seasons, ending in March 2023. She was nominated for a Critics' Choice Super Award for her role.
Lauren has also narrated audiobooks, including The Maid in 2022. In 2023, she started starring in the Showtime series Yellowjackets, playing the adult version of Vanessa "Van" Palmer.
Personal Life
Lauren Ambrose has been married to writer Sam Handel since September 2001. They have two children together.
