Lauren Ambrose (born February 20, 1978) is an American actress and singer. She is well-known for her roles in popular TV shows and movies.
Lauren gained a lot of attention for playing Claire Fisher in the HBO drama series Six Feet Under from 2001 to 2005. For this role, she was nominated for two important acting awards called Primetime Emmy Awards. She also won two Screen Actors Guild Awards as part of the show's cast.
She has also starred in other TV series like Torchwood: Miracle Day (2011), the suspenseful series Servant (2019–2023), and Yellowjackets (2023–present). Her film roles include In & Out (1997) and Where the Wild Things Are (2009), where she lent her voice to a character.
Lauren Ambrose is also a talented stage actress. She played the main role of Eliza Doolittle in the 2018 Broadway show My Fair Lady. For this, she was nominated for a Tony Award and won an Outer Critics Circle Award. She is also the lead singer of a jazz band called Lauren Ambrose and the Leisure Class.

Early Life and Education
Lauren Anne D'Ambruoso was born in New Haven, Connecticut on February 20, 1978. Her father, Frank D'Ambruoso, was a caterer, and her mother, Anne, was an interior designer. Her family background includes Italian, German, English, and Irish roots.
Lauren attended several schools in New Haven, including Choate Rosemary Hall and Wilbur Cross High School. She also studied at the ACES Educational Center for the Arts. She is a trained opera singer and studied voice and opera at the Boston University Tanglewood Institute.
Acting Career
Early Roles and First Steps
Lauren Ambrose started her acting career in New York theater. She appeared in an Off-Broadway play called Soulful Scream of a Chosen Son in 1990. Her first movie role was in the comedy In & Out in 1997. She then had a notable role as Denise Fleming in the high school comedy film Can't Hardly Wait in 1998.
Becoming Well-Known
In 1999, Lauren had a recurring role in five episodes of the TV show Party of Five. She also played the main young female character, Florence "Chicklet" Forrest, in the comedy film Psycho Beach Party (2000). That same year, she starred as Frankie Wheeler in the drama film Swimming.
Lauren became widely recognized for her main role as Claire Fisher in the HBO drama series Six Feet Under, which ran from 2001 to 2005. Her performance earned her nominations for two Primetime Emmy Awards. She also won the Screen Actors Guild Award for Outstanding Performance by an Ensemble in a Drama Series twice, as part of the show's cast.
Stage and Voice Work
In 2004, Lauren performed in the play Buried Child at the Royal National Theatre. She made her Broadway debut in 2006 in the play Awake and Sing!. Lauren also lent her voice to the monster KW in the animated film Where the Wild Things Are, released in 2009. She appeared in the 2009 Hallmark TV movie "Loving Leah." In 2011, she played Jilly Kitzinger in seven episodes of the TV series Torchwood: Miracle Day, earning a Saturn Award nomination.
Besides acting, Lauren Ambrose is the lead singer of Lauren Ambrose and the Leisure Class. This ragtime dixieland jazz band started in 2009 and has performed at various venues and charity events.
Recent TV Roles
In March 2018, Lauren returned to Broadway in a leading role as Eliza Doolittle in My Fair Lady. Her performance was highly praised, and she was nominated for a Tony Award for Best Actress in a Musical. She also won an Outer Critics Circle Award for Outstanding Actress in a Musical.
In October 2018, Lauren took on the main role of Dorothy Turner in the suspenseful series Servant for Apple TV+. The show ran for four seasons, ending in March 2023. For her work in Servant, she was nominated for a Critics' Choice Super Award.
Lauren has also narrated several audiobooks, including The Maid in 2022. In 2023, she began starring in the Showtime drama thriller series Yellowjackets, playing the adult version of Vanessa "Van" Palmer.
Personal Life
Lauren Ambrose has been married to writer Sam Handel since September 2001. They have two children together.
