Growing Up: LeGarrette Blount's Early Life

Blount was born on December 5, 1986, in Madison, Florida. His parents are Gary and Barbara Blount. He has two brothers or sisters. Blount went to Taylor County High School in Perry, Florida. He was a star in two sports: football and track & field.

High School Football Star

In high school football, he played for four years. He ran for over 1,000 yards in three of those years. He first reached this goal as a sophomore. He did it again the next year, even with a leg injury. As a senior, he was named a second-team All-state player.

Track and Field Achievements

In track and field, Blount was also very good. He ran the 100-meter dash in 11.34 seconds. He could long jump over 22 feet (6.75 meters). He also threw the shot put over 53 feet (16.22 meters). He was part of the 4 × 100 m relay team too.

After high school, he wasn't highly recruited by colleges. He wanted to go to Auburn University. But he didn't meet the academic requirements. So, he went to a junior college instead. He chose East Mississippi Community College.

College Football Journey

East Mississippi Community College: A Strong Start

At East Mississippi Community College in Scooba, Mississippi, Blount was a standout player. He ran for over 1,000 yards in both of his two seasons. In total, he gained 2,292 yards and scored 18 touchdowns. One amazing game was when he ran for 273 yards and three touchdowns. This was against Northeast Mississippi Community College. Blount started his junior year at Oregon. He shared the running back role with senior Jeremiah Johnson. This was Blount's first time sharing playing time. He had mixed feelings about it. In one game, both backs ran for nearly 100 yards and scored three touchdowns. This was in a big win over the Washington State Cougars. They also played well in a win against the Oregon State Beavers.

Blount set a new school record with 17 rushing touchdowns in one season. He also ran for 1,002 yards. Blount and Johnson were only the second duo in team history to each run for over 1,000 yards in the same season. Johnson led the team with 1,201 yards.

Blount had some disagreements with head coach Mike Bellotti. He was suspended for part of a game for "not following team rules." After the season, he missed some workouts. Coach Bellotti suspended him again in February for "failure to fulfill team obligations."

Blount worked hard to improve. He attended more academic and athletic sessions. He was brought back to the team by new coach Chip Kelly in March. He was in better shape for training camp. He was aiming for a 2,000-yard season. Blount was also named to watchlists for important awards.
