Discover Le Relais Ski Mountain
Le Relais is found in a place called Lac-Beauport. It's known as a great place for families to ski. People love it because the ski trails are always in excellent condition.
Amazing Snow and Night Skiing
Even though Le Relais isn't a huge resort, it offers a fantastic ski experience. The mountain can make snow on all its trails. This means there's always enough snow to ski, even if it doesn't snow much naturally.
Another cool thing about Le Relais is that all its trails are lit up at night. This makes night skiing very popular there! You can ski under the stars, which is a unique experience.
Home of Aerial Skiing Training
Le Relais is also home to a special training center. It's called the Centre national acrobatique Yves Laroche (CNAYL). This center is for aerial skiing. Aerial skiing is a type of freestyle skiing where athletes do flips and twists in the air.
The CNAYL has a special water ramp. This ramp lets skiers practice their aerial tricks even in the summer! They land safely in water instead of snow.
Summer Adventures at Le Relais
When the snow melts, Le Relais changes into an adventure park. In the summer, you can try out five high rope courses. These courses are often called arbre en arbre in the area, which means "tree to tree." It's a fun way to climb and explore among the trees!
The History of Le Relais
Le Relais first opened in 1936. However, the idea for a ski center started a few years earlier, in the winter of 1933-1934.
Choosing the Perfect Location
At first, some people thought about putting the ski center on the Plains of Abraham. But a famous skier named Herman "Jackrabbit" Smith-Johannsen had a different idea. He suggested a better spot: Murphy mountain.
So, the land for what is now Le Relais was bought for $1000. People also raised $8500 to build a small lodge at the bottom of the mountain. This lodge was a cozy place for skiers to warm up and relax.
Le Relais is special because many people consider it the birthplace of skiing in Quebec City.
