Le Roy Williams (born August 18, 1845 – died February 14, 1930) was an American soldier. He is famous for receiving the Medal of Honor. This is the highest award for bravery a soldier can get. He earned it during the American Civil War.

A Young Soldier's Start

Le Roy Williams joined the Union Army in July 1862. He was only 16 years old when he enlisted. The Union Army was the army of the northern states. They fought to keep the United States together during the Civil War.

He served in Company G of the 8th New York Heavy Artillery. This unit was a part of the Union Army.

Earning the Medal of Honor

Williams received the Medal of Honor on April 1, 1898. This was many years after the war ended. He earned it for a very brave act during the Battle of Cold Harbor. This battle took place in Virginia.

During the battle, Williams showed great courage. He helped recover the body of his regiment's commander. The commander was named Peter A. Porter. This act of bravery showed his dedication and courage.

Life After the War

After the Civil War ended in 1865, Le Roy Williams continued his service. He was promoted to first lieutenant. He was then transferred to the 10th New York Infantry. This happened shortly before his regiment was officially dismissed from service in June 1865.

After his time in the army, Williams lived in Niagara, New York. There, he worked as a customs collector. This job involved collecting taxes on goods coming into the country. Later, he lived in Buffalo, New York and Lansing, Michigan.
