History of Leakesville
Leakesville has had a post office since 1829, which is a long time ago! The town was named after Walter Leake, who was the third governor of Mississippi.
Where is Leakesville?
Leakesville is located in the southeastern part of Greene County. It sits on the west side of the Chickasawhay River. This river flows south and eventually joins the Pascagoula River.
If you travel on Mississippi Highway 63, Leakesville is about 20 miles (32 km) south of Lucedale. It's also about 19 miles (31 km) northwest of Sand Hill. Using Highway 57, you can reach State Line about 24 miles (39 km) north, or McLain about 17 miles (27 km) west.
The town covers a total area of about 6.3 square miles (16.3 square kilometers). Most of this area is land, with only a tiny part being water.
