Leckford is a small village in Hampshire, England. It is also a "civil parish," which is a local area with its own council. The village sits on the eastern side of the River Test. It is located just south of where the River Test and the River Anton meet. This meeting point is called a confluence. Leckford is found east of Longstock and south of Chilbolton.

History of Leckford

Leckford has a long history, with buildings that have stood for centuries. The village church, called St Nicholas's, is very old. Its main part was built in the 1200s (13th century). It was then rebuilt in the 1500s (16th century). Later, in the Victorian era (the 1800s), it was repaired and updated. This kind of repair is known as "Victorian restoration."

Old Transport Routes

Long ago, Leckford was connected by the Andover Canal. Canals were like man-made rivers used for boats to carry goods. Later, this canal route became a railway line. It was part of the Sprat and Winkle Line, which connected Andover and Redbridge. Even though the railway passed through Leckford, the village did not have its own train station. Today, the old railway path is used by walkers. It is now part of the Test Way, a long-distance walking path.

Leckford During World War II

During the Second World War, Leckford was close to an important airfield. This airfield was called Chilbolton Aerodrome. It was used by the British Royal Air Force (RAF). Later, it was also used by the United States Army Air Forces. Airfields like this were very important for planes during the war.

The Leckford Estate

A large area of land in the parish is known as the Leckford Estate. This estate is owned by the John Lewis Partnership. The John Lewis Partnership is a famous company in the UK. It owns many department stores and supermarkets. The Leckford Estate is used for farming and other activities related to the business.
