Lee Ha-yi (Hangul: 이하이; born September 23, 1996), known as Lee Hi, is a talented South Korean singer and songwriter. She first became famous as the runner-up on the TV show K-pop Star 1. Lee Hi officially started her music career on October 28, 2012, with her single "1, 2, 3, 4". This song quickly became a huge hit, reaching number one on the music charts. Her first full album, First Love, was released in two parts in March 2013.

In 2020, Lee Hi joined the hip-hop and R&B music label AOMG. She then released her studio album 4 Only in 2021.

Early Life and K-pop Star Journey

Lee Ha-yi was born on September 23, 1996, in Bucheon, South Korea. In December 2011, she auditioned for the TV show K-pop Star. She impressed everyone and finished as the runner-up. After the show, she signed with YG Entertainment, a big music company. Before her official debut, she was featured on a song called "It's Cold" by the group Epik High in October 2012.

Music Career Highlights

Starting Out: 2012–2015

On October 24, 2012, it was announced that Lee Ha-yi would debut as a solo artist named "Lee Hi". Her first digital single, "1, 2, 3, 4", came out on October 28. She performed the song for the first time on TV on November 4. Just a few days later, on November 8, she won her first music show award for the song. "1, 2, 3, 4" was the number one song on the Gaon Digital Chart for November. This earned her the Song of the Year - November award. After the success of her first song, Lee Hi released another digital single called "Scarecrow" on November 22.

On March 2, 2013, her debut album First Love was released digitally. It had five songs, including the main single "It's Over". The full album with ten songs, including "Rose", came out on March 28. Lee Hi also formed a special music group called "BOM&HI" with 2NE1's Park Bom in December 2013. They released a cover of Mariah Carey's "All I Want For Christmas Is You". In November 2014, Lee Hi formed another group called Hi Suhyun with Akdong Musician's Lee Su-hyun. They released the song "I'm Different" which featured iKON's Bobby. The duo won their first award for the song on November 23.

Growing Success: 2016–2018

On March 9, 2016, Lee Hi released her album Seoulite. It featured two main songs, "Breathe" and "Hold My Hand". "Breathe" was very popular and won her the Digital Bonsang award at the Golden Disc Awards. She started promoting these songs on March 10. On April 20, the full Seoulite album was released with a new main song, "My Star". Lee Hi even helped write and compose one of the songs called "Passing By".

Later in 2016, she sang on Gill's song "Refrigerator". She also released two songs for the drama Moon Lovers: Scarlet Heart Ryeo: "Can You Hear My Heart" with Epik High and "My Love". On December 31, Lee Hi appeared on the TV show Infinite Challenge as a special guest.

In 2017, Lee Hi was featured on Code Kunst's song "X" and Dok2's song "On & On". She helped write and compose "On & On". In August, she appeared on the TV show Party People. She shared that she had experienced some difficult feelings in the past, which inspired her to create her hit song "Breathe". On October 23, she was featured on Epik High's song "Here Come the Regrets". In March 2018, Lee Hi released her first Japanese album and went on a tour in Japan. In October, she covered Queen's "Bohemian Rhapsody" for the movie Bohemian Rhapsody.

New Beginnings: 2019–Present

On January 15, 2019, Lee Hi released the digital single "XI" with Code Kunst. She then made a comeback with her EP (mini-album) 24°C on May 30, 2019. The main song, "No One" (featuring B.I), topped all the music charts in South Korea. She also released a song called "20Min" that she wrote and produced herself. On June 6, she won her first music show award for "No One". At the end of 2019, Lee Hi decided not to renew her contract with YG Entertainment.

In June 2020, Lee Hi joined the TV show Begin Again for a few episodes. On July 22, 2020, the music label AOMG announced that Lee Hi had signed with them. She then released her comeback single "Holo". "Holo" reached number 7 on the Gaon Digital Chart and won R&B Track of the Year at the Korean Hip-hop Awards.

On September 9, 2021, Lee Hi released her third studio album, 4 Only. In March 2022, she won R&B Track of the Year again for her song "Only". In March 2024, her contract with AOMG ended, and she decided not to renew it. On September 23, 2024, Lee Hi signed a new contract with Duover. To celebrate her 28th birthday, she also released a video of her unreleased song "One Thing" on her YouTube channel.

Collaborations and Endorsements

On March 9, 2017, Lee Hi worked with the famous makeup brand MAC. They created a special matte red lipstick named "Lee Hi" as part of their Future Forward Collection. This lipstick was sold all over the world. On July 28, Lee Hi met fans at a MAC event in Seoul, South Korea. In October, she held another event with MAC and Marie Claire magazine, where she performed her songs and covers.
