What's Lefthand Branch Like?

Lefthand Branch gets its name from a creek that flows through the area. This creek is called Lefthand Branch Creek because it takes a left turn after splitting off from another creek called Tent Hill Creek.

The valley where Lefthand Branch is located is narrow and stretches for about 11 kilometers (about 7 miles) to the southeast. Most of the land here is used for raising cattle. You'll also find some small farms growing vegetables, a few olive groves, and even a small farm that grows grass for lawns (called a turf farm).

Mountains and Nature

Lefthand Branch is home to some interesting natural features:

  • Rocky Peak is a mountain that stands about 837 meters (2,746 feet) tall.
  • Laidley Gap is a mountain pass, which is like a natural path through the mountains.

A Look Back in Time

Lefthand Branch once had its own school, which changed names a few times!

  • It first opened on October 16, 1899, as Hillview Provisional School.
  • On January 1, 1909, it became Hillview State School.
  • In 1914, the name changed again to Viewland State School.
  • The school closed in 1923 but reopened in 1924 as Left Hand Branch State School.
  • Finally, this school closed for good in 1967.

The old school was located on the western side of Lefthand Branch Road.
