Legend of the Boneknapper Dragon is a fun, short animated movie from 2010. It was made by DreamWorks Animation. This film is part of the How to Train Your Dragon world. Many of the actors from the first How to Train Your Dragon movie came back to voice their characters.

The story follows Hiccup and his friends. They join their teacher, Gobber, on an exciting trip. Their goal is to find a legendary dragon called the Boneknapper Dragon. This short film first aired on Cartoon Network on October 14, 2010. The next day, it was released on Blu-ray and DVD with the main How to Train Your Dragon movie.

The Story of the Boneknapper

The movie starts with Gobber's house on fire! The Vikings and their dragons quickly work together to put out the flames. Gobber is sure that his old enemy, the Boneknapper Dragon, caused the fire. He describes the Boneknapper as a huge dragon that covers itself in bones like armor. It's also unique because it's the only dragon that can't roar; it's perfectly silent.

However, no one else believes the Boneknapper is real. They certainly don't think it burned Gobber's house. It looks more like his underwear caught fire while drying by the fireplace!

Gobber's Quest

Gobber doesn't give up. He promises to hunt down the Boneknapper once and for all. Hiccup feels he can't let Gobber go alone. So, he convinces his friends to join the adventure. As they row their boat to an island where Gobber thinks the dragon lives, Gobber tells them stories. He shares his past meetings with the monster. These stories are shown to us in a cool, traditional animation style.

Gobber says he first saw the Boneknapper when he found some frozen Vikings. This happened after he stopped on an iceberg during a family trip. He took a small treasure chest from the ice. The frozen Viking he took it from even punched him a few times! Then, the Boneknapper appeared and chased him back to his family's boat. Inside the chest was a small bone. Gobber has used this bone as his belt buckle ever since.

More Wild Stories

Gobber's stories get crazier and crazier. He tells of later times the Boneknapper appeared. But these meetings were always interrupted. Sometimes by hammerhead sharks, or a hammerhead whale. Once, a hammerhead yak jumped out of a volcano! He even claimed the Norse thunder god Thor got in the way.

The group is so busy listening to Gobber's tales that they don't notice their boat. It crashes onto the shore and sinks! They lose their only way home. But Gobber takes it in stride. He sets up a trap, using Fishlegs as bait. The friends still don't believe Gobber's stories about the Boneknapper.

The Real Boneknapper Appears

Suddenly, a real Boneknapper silently appears behind them! Fishlegs tries to warn everyone, but they ignore him. The dragon is ready to attack. At the same time, the Boneknapper tries to roar, but it only makes a tiny, squeaky sound.

The friends realize Gobber was telling the truth all along! They quickly take shelter inside their own trap. It looks like all hope is lost. But Hiccup notices something important. There's an empty spot on the dragon's neck armor. It looks exactly like Gobber's belt buckle bone! Hiccup figures out that the Boneknapper might just want its bone back. If it gets the bone, its armor will be complete, and it can finally roar.

A New Friend

At first, Gobber doesn't want to listen to Hiccup's advice. He doesn't want to give the bone back. But then, the dragon grabs him! Gobber finally gives in. He throws the bone back to the dragon. The bone lands perfectly in the empty spot. The dragon is finally able to let out a huge, triumphant roar!

It turns out the Boneknapper is friendly once its armor is complete. Gobber now has a new love and respect for the creature. The adventurers then ride the Boneknapper, probably heading back to Berk. Fishlegs tells the others that the dragon's roar is a mating call. Just then, four more Boneknappers appear in the distance! Gobber smiles, saying that this time, everyone will definitely believe him.
