Leonard had its start in 1881 when the railroad was extended to that point. A post office has been in operation at Leonard since 1881.

As of the census of 2010, there were 223 people, 109 households, and 69 families residing in the city. The population density was 297.3 inhabitants per square mile (114.8/km2). There were 121 housing units at an average density of 161.3 per square mile (62.3/km2). The racial makeup of the city was 97.8% White, 1.3% Native American, and 0.9% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 2.2% of the population.
There were 109 households of which 22.0% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 54.1% were married couples living together, 5.5% had a female householder with no husband present, 3.7% had a male householder with no wife present, and 36.7% were non-families. 34.9% of all households were made up of individuals and 15.6% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.05 and the average family size was 2.61.
The median age in the city was 48.9 years. 18.8% of residents were under the age of 18; 2.3% were between the ages of 18 and 24; 22.9% were from 25 to 44; 37.2% were from 45 to 64; and 18.8% were 65 years of age or older. The gender makeup of the city was 51.6% male and 48.4% female.
As of the census of 2000, there were 255 people, 116 households, and 74 families residing in the city. The population density was 514.9 people per square mile (196.9/km²). In the city, the population was spread out with 21.6% under the age of 18, 3.9% from 18 to 24, 24.3% from 25 to 44, 24.3% from 45 to 64, and 25.9% who were 65 years of age or older.
