This drongo is about 25 to 27.5 centimeters (10-11 inches) long. This measurement does not include its super long tail feathers. With its tail, it can be 30 to 40 centimeters (12-16 inches) long!

Male drongos usually weigh between 39 and 49 grams. Females are a bit lighter, weighing 35.5 to 44 grams. Their feathers are black and have a shiny bluish metallic look. The most amazing part is their tail. The outer tail feathers have long shafts that can be over 50 centimeters (20 inches) long!

You might confuse this bird with the greater racket-tailed drongo. But the lesser racket-tailed drongo has a small crest on its head. The greater racket-tailed drongo does not have this crest. Also, the greater drongo's tail is straight at the end.

Different Kinds of Drongos

Scientists have found that there are four different types, or subspecies, of the lesser racket-tailed drongo. These different types live in various parts of Asia. For example, one type lives in the lower Himalayas and parts of China. Another type lives in southern Myanmar and Thailand. Each type has adapted to its specific home.
