A Look at Lester Prairie's Past

Lester Prairie was officially planned out in 1886. It was named after John N. Lester, who originally owned the land where the town was built. A post office opened in Lester Prairie in 1888. The city became an official town in the same year.
Where is Lester Prairie?
Lester Prairie is located in the eastern part of McLeod County. Minnesota State Highway 7 is about one mile north of the city. This highway goes west to Hutchinson (about 16 miles away). It goes east to Minneapolis (about 42 miles away).
Glencoe is the main city of McLeod County. It is about 13 miles southwest of Lester Prairie. Local roads like McLeod County Roads 1, 9, and 23 help people get around the community. The Dakota Rail Regional Trail is a bike path that runs through the middle of town. It connects Lester Prairie to the Twin Cities.
The U.S. Census Bureau says that Lester Prairie covers about 1.00 square mile of land. A very small part, about 0.1%, is water. The South Fork of the Crow River flows past the city's southeast side. This river eventually flows into the Mississippi River.

Lester Prairie Schools
Lester Prairie has its own school district, ISD #424. The school building teaches students from kindergarten all the way through 12th grade. About 400 students attend the school. Dr. Melissa Radeke is the district's superintendent. Mike Lee is the principal for all grades, K-12.
