History of the Libyan Premier League
The Libyan Premier League began in 1963. Before that, there were three separate championships for different parts of Libya: the Eastern, Western, and Southern provinces.
The first national league season was in 1963-64. The champions from each province were invited to play:
- Al Ahly (Tripoli) from the Western Province
- Al Ahly (Benghazi) from the Eastern Province
- Hilal Sabha from the Southern Province
Hilal Sabha later pulled out because they didn't have enough resources. This meant the first league final was just between two teams. Al Ahly (Tripoli) played against Al Ahly (Benghazi). Al Ahly (Tripoli) won 2-0 over two matches (1-0 in each game). They became the first ever Libyan Premier League champions!
Who Has Won the League?
Al Ittihad is the most successful club in Libyan football. They have won 18 titles. This includes an amazing run of 6 titles in a row from 2004-05 to 2009-10. Their main rivals, Al Ahly (Tripoli), have won the league 13 times.
The last team to win the title from outside the capital city was Al Nasr in 2018. The "Big Two" clubs, Al Ahly (Tripoli) and Al Ittihad, have won 31 of the 48 titles played since 1964.
